fuel pump

Post by LyricsNLines » Fri Jan 29, 2010 8:05 pm

My fuel pump or something from that area whines when my car is at idle, doesn't matter the gear. It looks like I'm going to be replacing this fuel pump. What else should I be looking to replace with the pump?

Suggestions on fuel pumps?

I see this walbro 255 all over for cheap but whats the feedback on it? I want to keep the neon around 30 mpg also.

Walbros are good units. The reason it is cheaper, is you have to take the fuel module apart to install it. It is not the complete unit, just the pump. Some noise is normal, but if it is louder than normal, then it could be an issue.

I noticed it before but recently I idle'd next to some other neons and they were quiet. I haven't checked pressure yet but would a pump thats whining also show drops in pressure readings? Also could the whine be caused by a bad fuel filter? I've owned the car for 5-6 years and never replaced it.

The filter/regulator is generally good for the life of the car. Unless you get some crappy fuel. It wouldn't hurt to change it, if the pressure is not up to spec. (58 psi +/- 5 psi IIRC.) That give you a range of 53 to 63 psi for it to be in specs.
