new pics of an old truck **Updated**

Post by Mopar00Neon » Fri Jan 29, 2010 10:48 pm

Well, its finally started.

It was moved as far as the tractor would pull it up the hill. Wont be able to finish it until the middle of next month, so itll sit here until then.

But, this is my $30 truck. Or rather, its costing me one case of Corona.

Its a '47 Dodge 1.5 ton with hydraulic dump bed. Im keeping the bed, but not the sides of the bed. Its all complete, and original, AND Im getting the original title from the original owner.

Im shooting for the $3000 club with this truck, over on the killbillet forums. For now, Ill get the original engine running. Eventually, once I can find a parts truck, Im going to swap a 12v cummins into it.

I took some more pics, but these ones are the best overall pics.

Please don't put a 12v Cummins in this truck!!!!!!! If you want to put a different motor in it stick the Dodge Red Ram engine in the truck. I beg you not to put the cummins in it. I wish this truck was here i would of snagged it.

Going for the rat rod look.

I still think something like this will look good in there... not to mention more fun to build.

I've thought it would be cool to put a 12V 6BT into an old 40s or 50s Dodge.

Definitely want to see progress on this.

Ehhh. I like big V8's too. But nothing beats 1300 ftlb of torque from a turned up diesel.

Looks fucking AWESOME! I always wanted to do a ratrod but with a 2.4 stratus motor setup. Wouldn't be fast, wouldn't sound as awesome, but it would be very different.

Good luck with the build man, a cummins is going to look right at home in that truck. Just rust it up a little lol.

So, hit up the swap meet yesterday. Got a replacement for the missing hood emblem, a model A 'stop' lamp for a '3rd brake light', and a repro shop manual for the Dodge. Not bad for $160 and all day walking. Dodge parts and 'stop' lamps are hard to find. Will get pics up later.

No luck on a parts truck though. Found a nice 24v for sale, but Id rather the 12v. The simplicity of mechanical fuel injection appeals to me with this truck.

I rather have the mechanical Cummins as well. Very easy to make power without all the computer bullshit and reliable.

You are going with a 12v Cummins with that ol' Dodge?

Eventually. Im going to try to get the original engine running first, since its there and complete. (and Ive gotten worse looking things to run, mostly old tractors, but flat heads are easy. Once got a '37 tin-sided flathead V8 to run, for a little while, until the magneto took a shit, it had been sitting in a ditch for over 40 years. This truck has only been sitting under a tree for 20 years.)

I want to find an early 90s 2wd dually dodge with an MTX as a parts truck. Hopefully a wrecked one, cuz Id feel bad for stripping a perfectly good truck, as I like the boxy trucks.

Might even go with a 4BT if I could find one. Nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder with a turbo and mechanical diesel injection. lol.

Ideally, Id like to find a tow truck body from the 40s or 50s for it, and leave it ratty looking like the truck, but make it operational. In which case, the 12v would be best.

And, of course either a 12 or 18 speed tranny, just because I can. lol

Here are my finds from the swap meet. The emblem is the only thing missing from the truck.

The light will be hung under the middle of the bed and function as a 3rd brake light. My regular brake/tails will be Model A parts, with split lenses, red on the bottom for tail lights, and red/amber on the top for brake lights.

And these will be the tail lights.....

Well, Thought I would update this thread a little bit...

I havent gotten much done with the truck since Oct. as it is still parked at my now in-laws house in Mariposa. We took it up there for pictures at our wedding, and getting it back down here is an exercise in logistics between 4 different people (I have a truck, that cant tow the goose neck I can get, as my truck is too lifted, so I need a truck, then chains/binders, etc... )

Here is a picture of it from Dec at the in-laws house.
Image

But, prior to the wedding, while not finishing it (honeymoon cost more than expected) I did get a few things done. I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump and starter. Along with new plugs/wires/cap... some jumper cables and a few pieces of wire, it runs like a top. Nice and smooth. Its a little loud, as the exhaust has a few holes in it though. I also started cleaning up the interior, and ripped the old wiring out. I got the new fuse panel mounted and wires that need to go outside pulled through the firewall, but thats about as far as I got. Still need to finish the fuel system, rebuild the brakes, and find tires. After that, and finishing the wiring, itll be pretty much done.

When I took it to Mariposa, I was able to start it and and simply put it in 1st get, and at idle, it crawled up the trailer on its own, with no additional throttle input. Stopping is fun, with no brakes at all, but with 3 of the 6 tires being flat, itll stop decently. lol.

Here are a couple more pics... Will be more interesting once I get it back to my house and start working on it again.

Image
Image
Image

I have a video of it going up on the trailer, as well. Ill post it once I feel like getting it off my phone.

In the mean time, here are some older vids... In the first pic, the outer tire is indeed loose, and explains the movement. Its also a little jerky here, this was the 2nd time I drove it under its own power (and 2nd time in over 20 years its moved also).... the clutch was a little jerky, since then, I have driven it much more and the clutch has freed up enough to be as smooth as my neon.

 I didn't see this before. Such a sweet project you have there.

I love the Ram hood ornament and the STOP lamps

Just before our dealership switched hands, we sold our company 47 Dodge tanker truck. With the tank removed and some minor refurbishment, the truck sold for 10K
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
