Lost key... Listen to this

Post by DoubtedNeon » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:14 pm

So I lost my keys to the snow this winter, and throughout the winter ive been turboing my neon (msII and such) as some of you may know.

I called the dealership to get a new key, and its 54 Dollars for the key and 40 for them to program it... WTF!? are you serious?

is this right or are they trying to screw me?!

And i have to tow the car in and get it programmed.

Any advice is welcomed. please help yes its sentry

Also, I have ms in it and I swapped a Manual ECU in it that is not programmed to the car.

Yep, that sound right. :(

You could always do what I do and slip a tech $20 to program it "on the side". :D

If you are saying he should use this method. He doesn't have 1 key, let alone 2.

I got your PM, but now that I read the thread, I have to agree. Those prices are right in line. We charge $45.00 to program them. Granted, we will do as many as you like for the same price, but a 1/2 worth of labor is the going rate.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Per our phone call, here is the info I shared with you Colt...

The dealer needs to pull up the VIN from your car and retrieve your SKIM #. Then they would use the DRB III or StarScan to program the PCM in your car with your car's VIN and SKIM. All should be good from there

I wish I could get a 2006 neon let alone a key for one.

Ebay is a good idea though.

$76 key and $38 to program a Pontiac key. Looks like we've got it slightly cheaper.

you guys got it easy! the jag i just sold is similar in that if you don't have both factory keys you cannot reprogram them. cost per key - $289, and that doesn't even include the needed fob, just the key itself.

You can do the same thing by taping the key to the column. Prolly what they did, just put it inside.

well I know this isn't helpful but I thought I'd stir the pot a little. My red car came with 2 SKIM keys, but I only got one RKE fobik and it was haggard with a button missing, so today I programmed a new one for it.

-brand new fob. FREE - found in garage!
-programmed. FREE - dad brought home the DRB!

Total spent: $0

priceless.

They did it to bypass the SKIM for w/e reason to install the car alarm.

So when professional thief breaks into car, they start it up and drive away. PCM doesn't shut down crap.

i've heard you don't need a key with skim as long as the key is near the lock cylinder. Get a $3 key cut and have your grey key taped to the steering column. The plain key should work in the ignition...

if you are going to do this route then to yourself a favor and break the cut part off of the gray part. it will still work the same way and there is no point in leaving working key inside your column.
