Invest in a WRX

Post by Jerome Adams » Sat Jan 30, 2010 1:36 pm

apparently they never depreciate! They sold new for $24-25K and I have seen numerous 2006 and 2007 listed at $20-22K.

Even the 02s are going for around 10-12K...and these aren't the ones that have 10-20K in mods to them either...these are the lightly modded to stock versions.

I went and looked at an 04 with 135K on the odo and light damage to the left rear quarter panel (dented and scraped with touch up paint over the rusted scrape) and the dealer is asking $10,650 for it. I offered them $7000 for it, and the sales manager actually came out of his office to ask me if I was seriuos...

I test drove the 04 and loved it, but not gonna pay that much for a car with 135K on the clock!

If you want AWD, get an EVO 8, 9, or 10.

There are few Evos around the Kansas City area (about 150 miles away)...but they are a little out of my price range right now $22K. After I get promoted this summer I will be in better shape.

Also looking into a 3 series BMW. Still doing research on which is the easiest/cheapest to tune. I like the sedans cuz I got 3 kids so if the neon is up on jack stands I can still fit the whole family in my other car.

I love my NEON and plan on keeping it, but I am tired of FWD. Want a RWD or AWD.

I'd pay more for a stock SRT than a modded one. That goes for any car really, unless I knew the previous owner personally. It's not worth it to inherit someone else's 400 whp problem.

That's ridiculous... my buddy has a 05 STi with average mileage, practically stock (just a few bolt ons) and he was asking like 16k if I remember right.

I definitely would not pay that much for a car with 135K on it.

Those 3 Series in-line 6's are nice. I test drove a 325i before buying the Audi. Of course, not as fast as that Evo you were looking at, but beautiful nontheless. You probably already know what you'd be getting yourself into with 'German Engineering', and honestly, if you're not a retard the car will drive like a dream. Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Now, come to the Dark Side.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

Only old rare cars are investments.

So what is the exact dig on "german engineering"? I know they can be expenisve but if they are properly maintained...and I would be looking at an older one with fewer bells and whistles.

I really like the looks of the 325 and 328. I can fit my whole family in it, not to mention RWD and a manual trans. And there are plenty of them around. Just need more HP.

I like the IS250 as well (300 and 350 aren't offered with a manual trans).

They both would need more HP for me to be happy and I am sure that I can't afford to Turbo either. That is why I was looking at the WRX. Plus I love they way they look and sound. The flat 4 scares me because it is unfamiliar but I didn't know shit about an I4 before I got the neon and I have slowly learned a little by tinkering with it.

As it stands there is nothing out there that makes me happy so I am just staying the course with the neon.

Wonder how much it would cost to make the neon AWD...LOL

It can be expensive and quite confusing if you don't know what you're doing. There are times when you're doing work on a German car and just wondering why or how they thought some designs were beneficial.

I find it fun. If you can do it yourself, have a basic understanding on what you're doing, have patience, and a whole vocabulary of swear words, then 'German Engineering' really isn't that scary.

well aren't germans usually drunk? That might explain some of it.

I will obviously have to do more research.

actually i am quite fond of the wrxs one of my friends put an sti turbo in his and he now has 300whp. Its a very nice looking car and I have to admit the boxer engine sounds very nice. He just got 255/40/17s for it. I can't wait to see those monsters mounted.

I hate to be "that guy" but a dealer friend in New Jersey sold a 2002 with 100K on the clock, silver, 5 spd., stock WRX for $6000 about a week ago.

They can be had for cheap(er) but it's really hard to find. I do freelance web work for a Subaru/Mazda dealer and yeah, in the snow belt Subaru cars keep their value like crazy and if you want a turbo car that is not a Forester, you will have to pay more for it. Get a Forester XT with 60-80K for $10-$12K all day long.

Investments should gain value. hopefully. Expecting it to go down a little is just slower depreciation.

That's because it's New Jersey. Flooded with cars of all sorts.

I don't see how I can see justification for beaten WRXs in here, which are extremely expensive to fix...yet everyone hates on "molested" SRT-4's, which are a billion times easier to work on and cost less to repair.

I'm certainly not backing anybody up who wants to spend even 6k on a 100k WRX. Retarded.

I'm always undecided what my next car will be. WRX are cool, but I don't think I'd get one.

Hell most cars depreciate more than that before the ink is even dry on the paperwork, never-the-less over 3 years.

That dealer must be smoking crack! 11 grand for an 04 with 135K? I mean the WRX is a nice car and all but it still has its roots as an econobox. Plus with that many miles on a turbo car you looking at stuff that needs to be replaced even as general upkeep. Even if it was taken care of (which I doubt with the cosmetic issues you stated). With a turbo you looking at higher engine bay temps which take a toll on anything rubber (vac hoses and such) and I wouldn't doubt if the turbo is gona need a rebuild before 150K.
