Premium fuel test

Post by Alex Kurdian » Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:04 pm

Ok I have completed a test...From day one when I bought the car new I was putting in high octane fuel in the car...I'm not sure how you guys call it but I use BP Fuel 98 octane...has all the cleaners etc in it...

I stopped using that for a while and started using the unleaded 95 octane fuel...its not the cheapo stuff but has some cleaners and its much better fuel than the 91 octane crappy stuff...

I have found that my car drives better and doesn't drink as hard....using the 98 octane fuel while probably better for the engine drank like crazy....essentially I would watch the fuel gauge drop so quickly it wasn't funny...

I asked BP about the quality of the 95 stuff and they said it was good...so now I'm just using that...maybe once a month I might use the 98 octane for its cleaning properties but I guess that debatable...

Wow. 91 octane is the crappy stuff down there? That's the premium stuff over here. You can get 94 octane at certain gas stations but mostly it's just 91 as the premium and 87 as the low grade stuff (regular)

I've always wondered if export spec cars get a special PCM tune or compression change to compensate for the higher octane. All things equal, higher octane fuel is worse than regular stuff, performance wise. It burns much slower, therefore most of the fuel is wasted and pushed out with the exhaust. I bet export cars go through cats and 02 sensors like crazy if they have a standard 87/91 tune.

Yeah, you have to remember that the bulk of the world uses the RON number.

what kind of milage were you getting with the different octane fuels? Try out the "crappy stuff" (which is still better than 87 octane in the states) and let us know what you find.

What is the R+M/2 octane of the "crappy stuff"

I'd be surprised if it was much higher than 87.

Also at least in the States, all fuel must have enough detergent to keep things clean. Mother EPA would be very angry if it didn't.

Even diesel must meet stricter standards than other countries.

FPV Falcon though, drool. Hear they are getting the new Coyote engine with F.I. The N/A engines already had more HP than our 03-04 F.I. Cobras. I want.

Guys Guys Guys Holden's and Fords Suck ass they may have a powerful engines that kick ass but that's about it!!

All the bits and pieces are crappy made in china plastic crap...the lines on the car are not perfect they do not line up proper...it appears like they are just slapped together...

My mate bought a Holden and he literally kept taking the car back as bits were virtually just falling off!

We call fords here F ix O r R epair D aily cars....

The interiors of both are poor quality ...they are used here for Taxis and they are all Taxis and fleet cars in my book...shit heaps!

I had a holden commodore once and it was a shit heap....the only thing that rocked was the engine...

My friggin Neon has a better interior than some of those cars...no shit and my lines match up better than a holden...

I would buy a Jap , Euro or US car over them any day! I'm an aussie and I bought a US car...why ? cause it was better than any holden or ford in that price range...

People try that one here too, lol, except I've had more problems with my two Dodge's than my two Fords. Anyways, your Neon has a better interior than our Neons! lol. Always something better somewhere.

:withstupid: I would be interested to see if 91 would do best. I put the highest octane in my tank once. It was expensive and was absolute crap for the engine. You never know, it could be better and save you some money.

actually the reason y the body lines suck on those cars are because they are mostly American bodies and interiors :P. But i so agree with the engines.

I think a lot of people are missing the fact that 91 octane here in the US is different than 91 octane in Australia.

The US uses the R+M/2 (RON + MON/2)

The bulk of the rest of the world just uses the RON number alone.
