I found the video. He was flying! And then it looked like his sled bounced off the walls and he went flying off into a pole.

Wow! That is so messed up that those barriers aren't padded! Specially right after that big turn.

Wow, thats crazy!
It seems to me it would be common sense to take every safety precaution with something that dangerous.. Padding those steel bars and even enclosing the whole track with some type of netting.
RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili

You'd think they could at least put some padding there.....

yes, it was a sad incident, but when you hit anything that doesn't move at 90mph (padded or not) you're toast. I'm not trying by any means to down play how sad it is that it happened. I'm just pointing out the simple truthNickKo wrote:This is what I am thinking, too....MyNeonSaysHi wrote: Wow! That is so messed up that those barriers aren't padded! WOW that's so fucked up. What a horrible way to die, it looked like he was at the end too.
A net, or fuck, enclosing the whole thing like a water slide would seem like a better idea. Yes, 90mph is no fun to be bouncing off shit, but I know motorcycle riders who have gone down even faster and survived.

Agreed with all of u sad way to go. Rip. You would think that there would be extra safety due to thatits the freakin olympics and these guys and girls are the best in the world. You think that they should be extra cautious with everything to prevent such accidents. The only other thing I can say is that he's in a better place and hopefully we all take better care of these people now since something so terrible happened. God bless his family through these times.

This situation is no different than any other safety situation. Generally someone has to die before drastic changes are made.
On June 21, 2008, Scott Kallita died as a result of a runaway nitro funny car that his a pole at the very end of the race track. For the 2010 racing season all nitro cars are required to have a device that once the car passes a transponder, which is 400' past the finish line, the ignition and fuel will be shut off.
May this Olympian R.I.P. and the powers that be use this tragedy as a learning experience so it doesn't happen again.

This is definitely terrible! but like it was said before I doubt padding would have done anything. A net probably would have saved his life but if your putting it there then you have to put it around everything. He definitely F'ed up that corner bad so It really could happen anywhere!

it was a pretty freak accident and the guy got out of shape pretty bad. I doubt anyone thought that would even be possible let alone happen with this caliber of athlete. It really sucks it happened but it was a freak accident that I dont think could have really been planned for unless they put nets around everything

A net wouldn't work. The guy would get out of control and snag a leg as he flew by at 80+ and rip it right off.
The best way (I think, at least) is to enclose the entire tube, like a water slide. That's certainly the best suggestion I've heard so far, at least.

ya for sure I think building up the walls and tunneling would be the best solution but then are they going to do it around every corner on every straight to make sure it doesnt happen again? I just dont think its fair to say that its sad this had to happen for soemthing to be done. They can always make a bit more safe but they have to eventually stop somewhere and plan for 99% of accidents. This one really seemed like it fits in that last 1%TheRandom1 wrote:A net wouldn't work. I dont think thats a viable solution... Theres an aspect of risk in ever sport heck in everything we do in day to day life. like I said all you can really do is plan for 99% of things that could happen and hope that the 1% doesnt happen. ps the numbers I just made up for arguement sake, this accident is probably more like 1 in a billion
