So what now....

Post by neonpla » Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:02 am

We've been having meets locally for SRT's and we've gotten to the point where we meet up weekly and there is about 9-15 srt's on average.. We've gotten some really great turn outs. This Friday we chilled for a hour and then went on a cruise of some twisties and that was fun.... Since I'm kind of the coordinator of the meets everyone looks at me like "what now?" lol. I have track days planned and also we have a BBQ coming up when the weather gets warmer along with install day at each others houses to help the lesser mechanically inclined guys, lol.

What else could I start up? What do you guys do at your local meets?

Thanks in advance.

Go on a long rally drive. Plan it out so it's safe and fun but make it like a dice run. Have stops at like mini golf place, food joint or some other odd ball places that are cool that you could enjoy things as a group.

Maybe volunteer as a group someplace. Habitat for Humanity or a food pantry or something like that. Show the community that a group like yours that is tight and works well together is more than just a car club.

We used to be like that in SA, and the SRT scene took a massive nosedive. I believe there was only 1 SRT at the meet the other day. HA.

Like some of the others have said. try and find something out of the norm to do as a group. go on long cruises, organize rally's, maybe try and organize a charity car show in your area for whatever charity tickles your fancy. BBQ's and camp fires (if the locations are available), track days (both drag and lapping if possible), etc. The possibilities are really as endless as you decide to make them.

I organize an extended cruise up here every year through the Niagara Escarpment (from Stoney Creek to Niagara Falls). The cruise takes about 4 hours when done to plan, but the route is only about a 30 minute drive on the highway between the 2 spots. I also have organized the Canadian Neon Nationals for the past 2 years, and will be doing so again this year (note to self...get going on that lol).

In the spring, I'm doing a poker run. Here's how it works:

Everyone attending buys in at the meet up spot. You can do whatever amount you want. They also draw their first card there. Then everyone meets at point #2, draws another card, etc. You can either do 5 or 7 meeting points.

I'm doing a $50 buy in, and half goes to the american cancer society. The other half goes in the pot, and the top 3 hands get $. If you're doing it for charity, it's very, very easy to get restaurants and other establishments to jump through hoops to make you welcome.

What I have always seen that works is not meeting weekly. If you meet too often people get bored and look at each other like "what now" and people start feeling like they have to go and its more of a chore to go to a meet and not so much cause they want to go. Try meeting once or twice a month and get stuff planned with time. Also try meeting up with other local car groups every now and then it really keeps stuff interesting and gives people a chance to see what other people are doing and gives you motivation to want to work on you car and do something new.

I have also found out recently here with our group that meeting up to work on a car is just as fun. If someone has a issue that you all can fix make your meet to do that, it bonds people and builds trust and gives everyone a learning experience. Just my .02

How does that work with the cards? Do you open a new deck at each point to keep things honest? (not implying anything...just asking how you do it so people don't claim that the person holding the cards is stacking the deck). Let me know, I might have to look into setting something like this up in the spring.

You write their cards down as they draw them. Then people can't trade them either. You only have to buy one deck too.

Something I've seen done is to get the least likely deck. Like a bugs bunny deck, a deck with massive numbers, a touristy deck from some natural attraction, etc. But then people can still trade cards.

but how do you know the person holding the deck isn't stacking it...setting it up so his/her own cards or those of a bud are the winning cards?

I'm just a very untrusting person when it comes to a money situation. been burned a few too many times...

When you're at the drag strip, how do you know that the staff isn't punching in slower numbers to make you have slower slips?
