Painting Dash

Post by Alex Kurdian » Sun Feb 14, 2010 5:57 pm

I've always liked black and I thought about many times paining the top of the dash black...not glossy that's too extreme but a matte type finish but not too matte...I think it would look awesome?

has anyone done this and can recommend it? can U post pics?

Gloss black ftw. Don't mind the wires. That has been cleaned up.

Isn't it already kinda flat black from the factory? Or do you have a different interior color?

Yeah that's what they call it, but it's pretty black IMO haha.

But still I've seen some semi Matte finishes on some dashes here and they look great...no too glossy otherwise the reflection is bad

See, while i'm sure it looks good in person, to me this is tacky as you only did the dash area. Why would you not also do the steering column cover, and the doors, and the center console? It looks incomplete to me.

Painting interior pieces is not something where you can do only one part and have it look really good. If you're going to do one part, do them all to match or don't do it at all.

edit...I just saw that you did your A pillar with the guages in it. Did you do the other side too? What about the B and C pillars and the rear dash for that matter? Is that something that is "in the works" for future completion?

I agree. This shot was taken before i was able to paint all of those other pieces. I still have yet to do the front doors and center console.

Currently I have the b and c pillars done, the back doors, the whole dash, and the driver side a pillar. The rest will all be done come spring when it gets warmer out and I can actually get some work done. I don't have a shot of the b pillars but those are done too. The entire interior will be black.

I take back my previous statement then Sir. I was not aware that the whole interior was done, (or in the works). I've seen too many people who only do the dash and leave it at that...and like I said, to me that looks tacky as it looks incomplete. If you're gonna do it, either do it all...or none of it.

If you wanted to paint it strictly matte, it would look okay, but it wouldn't match the rest of the interior IMO. Never been a fan of painted dashes.

Just do it! ;) If the dash sucks, just redo it with another color. I used a little over four cans of paint to get my headliner nice and black (which came out AWESOME) so I figure it'll probably take three or so to do the dash. Spend the two hours and $20 to find out; that's what I'm going to do. Now the trim on the other hand... :tardbang:

^^ Thats baller! Just had 2 friends do similar things, one did a suede headliner in his Focus and the other plaid wrapped his A B & C pillars in his E46.

Post by Alex Kurdian » Sun Mar 14, 2010 7:18 pm

Thats kinda cool..I suppose you could wrap the dash in a really nice material ...or if you could afford it leather...probably would look better than paint...

I got a spare dash from the jy the other week. I am going to try and see what I can do with it as an experiment, nothing too flashy.

Did anyone else notice that the plaid dash matches the person sitting at the table shirt ? Lol.

I would have to say that I did paint the interior on a previous car. Just more accent pieces (small part of dash , handles , ect. ). I liked it for a lil while and then just went to the j/y and bought all stock stuff. In my opinion if you do the whole interior it should look pimp. I would do what you like , but keep in mind that it should be something you'll like 6 months from now too. Keep up the work.

Korn you should write up a how to..that paint job looks killer. As for the fabric, I had a suede almost near perfect salsa red cover. It was good untill the sun faded it. Just something you have to watch out for when using fabrics. The plaid cover is killer though.
