Knock off rims...Lets talk.

Anything that has to do with wheels and tires goes here. Will a wheel fit? Ask it here. Will a tire fit your wheel? Ask it here.

The Slipstreams ARE Rota's version of the SW388. I'm a bit confused about your question... Are you asking if they come in the original Honda bolt patterns that Spoon offered?

I think he meant the fact that it's a well known fact around here that you are "Mr LEGIT wheels-only" here. It's pretty humorous actually. Most of us will settle for lesser price rip off wheels so we don't have to roll around on stock wheels forever. I'm not knocking your wheels, they look fine. I'm just saying that you go above and beyond to let everyone know how you feel about wheels that aren't made by Spoon, Advan, Rays, Work, Volk, etc... aka expensive wheels that even if we saved up for, we couldn't justify when there are other wheels out there that will do the job for fractions of the price and most likely never crack or break. Rip offs are good... They keep the "OG" companies on their feet to keep coming up with new products.

Adam feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Rip off wheels DO NOT keep the real companies on their feet at all; they do the complete opposite. Did you read my first post? How could giving knock-off companies money help the real companies? It's just like the whole Napster thing and music sharing. The record companies aren't profiting from the music that THEY produced when people are getting it for cheap/free on torrent sites. If this were a music forum, I'm sure that would be a very controversial topic just like this one. Make sense?

EDIT: The reason I've rocked stock wheels for so long is because I don't want to waste my money on crappy wheels. There's nothing funny about it at all. I don't want to jump the gun and buy cheap wheels like a lot of other people, just so I can say that I upgraded them. That's not the reason I build my car. I do it for myself, and I don't cheap-out on my hobbies. Who's laughing now?

I'm laughing all the way to the bank. I had fitment issues with my AFX header, and my Fast Fab header, both high quality, not cheap headers. I sold them, and bought an OBX knockoff. Man, it fit GREAT for a knockoff header.

I had no issue dolling out $300 for my magnum head, or $200 for my R/T ernie intake manifold, or $600 for my zex kit. I would have an issue putting $1600 wheels on a $1500 car, since my insurance would not cover them. Kosei stopped making 5x100 wheels,

For the LIFE of me, I can't find Spoon/Rays/SSR wheels in 5x100 in 15x7 with an offset I need. I can however go buy a complete set of rota's for $440 right now.

Not knocking what you do OB, just trying to show you that not everyone will do what you are doing. It's the reason why threads like these pop up. Sometimes cost is high on someone's priority list.

However, I will say this: I wont buy anything knockoff made that would destroy a motor, or potentially kill me. I wouldn't buy OBX cams (they care coming), I wouldn't buy eBay brakes, I wouldn't buy those eBay hub adapter shits. A header though, I will.

You're Napster analogy is weak. It has been proven that MANY people will download music and if they like it, they will go and purchase the album and still get the greedy record companies (not the artists!) their money, so the loss of funds to the record companies is trivial.

Good for you for not cheaping out, I can appreciate that. In fact I guess we could all be that way in theory since you never actually purchased anything. You have aspirations to buy something expensive, but still I see no end product. I hope that you are building up cash to buy these $5000 wheels and will prove me wrong. I'd LOVE to be wrong about this. Until then, I have no proof of you doing what you claim.

And as for the knock offs not keeping the real "legit" companies on their feet, please explain. There will ALWAYS be people that WILL buy expensive, high quality wheels and will want new designs. This will drive the market to keep expanding its business model so that it can continue to grow and be profitable. I don't think the market is composed of the same people that buy reps and those that buy legit wheels, nor do I think it ever was. There have always been people trying to find cheap alternatives to a pricy solution, and there always will be. It's a fact of life.

I'm still laughing Derek... I'm not sure what you just said that was supposed to make me change my mind?..

OFF TOPIC: I would buy OBX cams if they made them in 22 specs.

ON TOPIC: I'm kind of in between on this agruement, I want real BBS for the NYG and I'm saving for TSW for the sedan , but for a track car I would buy knock off rims I couldn't take the chance of wrecking a 400 dollar rim.

Also its so hard to get real rims in the right offset and 5x100.

I totally understand how budget is a huge thing for most people. I'm not exactly filthy rich myself, but that's no excuse not to buy quality parts IMO. It just takes a bit longer, but it does make it that much more satisfying. My entire build has revolved around saving saving saving, then being 100% pleased with my hard work and patience. It's not just wheels, it's a lot of stuff.

Jerry, some of us aren't driving $1500 cars. I do agree that it would be a bit crazy to spend $3000 on wheels and tires for a Neon, even if it is worth $5-6000.

And sidepipe, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Give Rays Engineering a call and ask them how much Rota and other knock off companies have helped their business. Talk about getting laughed at!

Man, OB. You're pretty full of yourself. If you know so much why don't you go work for them and get some wheels for free??? I see your points, but you clearly don't know as much as you think you do.

Also, I'm not saying quality parts shouldn't be bought. I would never advocate ebay coils, or nonsense like that but just because a part isn't the HIGHEST quality, doesn't make it trash.

Yup. Ryan caught my reference. I thought you were originally being light-hearted Derek, but apparently this is sensitive to you? Preaching from your soap box about saving high-price, high-quality wheel companies and the like does nothing for 99% of this forum. I can't justify wheels that are over 1/4 the cost of my car. Most people on here aren't advocating buying cheap, crappy parts. We just know that this is a forum for cars that are erm...cheap. Cheap to own, cheap owners, and well...cheap to mod. Let's face it...most people on here will NOT be affected if big-time companies go under because a vast majority of us wont own cars that deserve those parts...and if we do, we certainly wont be able to afford the wheels or parts then.

Also, I get that you want all legit stuff, and that's no big deal. It's your car, build it how YOU want

BUT

The parts that most of us purchase do the job just as well as the real part, at a fraction of the cost. $600 exhuast, on a Neon, will perform the same as my $120 eBay exhaust and $40 muffler. That's what Ryan's saying. Big brand companies aren't bent outta shape because the Neon crowd doesn't shop from them. Just like we wouldn't flip if they went out of business.

Ryan, I understand what you're saying, but I've heard it all before. I know that most of our members build on a budget, I'm one of them afterall. Just because I promote something, that doesn't mean I have to go work for Rays or spend $3k on wheels. It's the prinicple that I'm getting at. Like I said, wheels are only a small portion of the knock-off industry. They just happen to be one of the more controversial of the bunch. Also, claiming that I "don't know as much as I say I do", but doing nothing to prove me wrong in ANY WAY, is quite a weak statement, wouldn't you agree?

I'm done arguing about this though, this is a thread wanting people's input. I want nothing more than to drop my 2 cents and be on my way. If some people don't understand my reasoning, that's fine. I just find it odd that the same people who shit on our industry by buying fake parts think they can turn around and call themselves real enthusiasts.

I have a love/hate relationship with knockoffs. Of course if you can't afford them, and want wheels, I don't hate. But I am a brand whore and I will say having real wheels does (sadly) give you more props and respect from others.

"Yo look at dat neon wit da rotaz w/ work stickers"

"yo those are real"

"omfg."

The responses from people are hilarious and that's a reason why I love it. I don't care if the car cost 8k and the wheels x amount of money, does that really matter? Considering it's a "Neon" people expect it to have Rotas, or whatever replica discounttiredirect companies are, and I feel like the car deserves more, it's up to the person.

Will I like a car more if it has real wheels vs. knock offs? Yes. Just adds that bit of flare and attention imo.

Agreed. I wouldn't do it for the fact that they are real though. Your situation is different. You whore brands

I'd do it because the car was worthy, OR they look good. Nothing on my car or area would cause me to need that diffference in quality.

Yeah for me the name is definitely not the key, it's more the quality. Then there's the baller status, like what Anthony was getting at. I can't say that isn't part of the allure. I really do believe in supporting the real companies though too, our industry's mini-economy depends on it.
