o2 simulators: do they work?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

I'm not sure you can buy them anymore. I believe the EPA busted some retailer balls on those.

All the sources that used to sell them legit, no longer carry them.

Technically you can make your own if you know the correct voltage that the sensor sends to the pcm. I'm not electronically savy so I'm not sure how to do it though.

You could always get a cheap high flow cat as a backup plan, eliminates the need to bypass the emissions.

OR...you can use a Spark Plug Defouler.....We did this with seisephiroth's car since he has a catless downpipe.........i dont recall him ever throwing a code...

what it does is pull the sensor out of the exhaust stream, causing it to read much less than it normally would (which is right about in range as if there was a cat...

 this was just on the s10forums

go the spark plug anti fouler route. I have had a few people come to me with the electronic simulators and they have either shorted out the pcm or made the car run like crap

but if you want a cheap DIY at your own risk. I made a how to over on 1gn, it worked on my 96 and kept the cel off for just over 1000 mi before the HG went. unfortunately I only have text, the pics are long gone. I also left the heater circut connected to the 02 sensor, because I was using it to plug the o2 hole and look legit anyways. there is a way to bypass this too, but it involves resistors and they can get quite hot.
First off I did this to my car. I am not responsible for you if you attempt this.. also, sorry about some of the pics are a little blurry.

Parts needed[u
1 - Mohm resistor
1 - 1µF capacitor
wire
Soldering iron
solder
Electrical tape
*film canister (I used this to hold the simulator and to keep it dry you can use whatever)

1.) get your supplys and your old o2 sensor

2.) cut your wire. I stripped the end then cut another section and slid the caseing up.

3.)Now Solder in your resistor and capacitor

4.) tape up each side so nothing can touch and ground out.

5.) poke some holes in your film can (or make a place for the wires in whatever you use)

6.) Feed the wires through the holes in the film can and put the simulator insidethe film can ( you may have to tweak a little to make it fit)

7.) Tape up film can (to keep water out)

8.) now get out your O2 sensor! the white wires are your heater (DO NOT CUT THESE!!!) you will be cutting the black and grey (signal wires) (yours may be diffrent so double check) than splice your simulator in to the side connected to the plug. (the sensor side is now dead so you can tape it or leave it)

9.) tape up and you are done!

I have done this and still throw a code. P0138 :banghead:

It is a hit/miss kind of thing. At the worst, you are only out $5 for trying it.

I'm gonna try the anti-fouler mod, I'll be back with results in a week or two.

Some ppl have stacked two of them to get it to work. ::shrugs::

I haven't had to attempt it, so I can't personally tell you what my results are.
