18" wheels. how do i measure?

Post by turbonick » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:29 pm

my buddy has some 18" wheels i might buy for the neon for after the swap. i'm a jeep guy. backspacing is from mounting surface to back of rim. now i know the rims for these cars are measured offset from center of rim to mounting surface. since that's hard to measure with a tape measure, does anyone know what measurement from mounting surface to back side of rim i need for 18's to fit on the '00 neon?

i haven't seen the rims yet so all i know is they are 18's. when i see them i will measure the width and backspacing. i just need to know what measurement i need so they'll fit. so i dont buy them then find out i cant use them. i dont like wheel spacers.

hopefully that wasnt too confusing haha sorry if it was

thanks,
nick

First, check out the above thread to see if it answers your questions.

Generally, with wheels that large, you want to know the width and offset. Offset is usually stamped on the inside of the wheel face. Width is there sometimes, but with aftermarket wheels you might have to look them up on the web. If the wheel is wider than 7.5", the offset would have to be very low to clear the rear tension strut. Also, with a wheel that size, the only way to clear the strut perches would be to run a super lo-pro tire (30 series or so).

Test fit them on your car. If your buddy really wants to sell them, Im sure he wont mind.

The width and offset can be found on the back of the spokes of the wheel, near the hub, in the barrel, or a sticker on the barrel.

- 1X18H2 ET 50

- 2001
- TYP.08301001

Code: Select all

1X18H2 ET 50
Im goint to assume that the first number is a 7 and not a 1. Unless these wheels are an inch wide

Your wheels are 7 inches wide, 18 inches in diameter, and have an offset of +50mm. I doubt they will fit. Most likely you will have to run a 10MM spacer to bring them back to +40 offset.

put them on the car. i'll probably change the color. the front rubs by a c**t hair and the back rubs on the lower control arm. these wheels have 225/40 toyo proxies on them. i think with a small wheel spacer they will fit PERFECT. without coilovers. as much as i dont like wheel spacers, im going to run them just because i cant afford coilovers yet and where i live, the wheels wouldnt last a day with a 30 series tire lol also i like the 225 tires. i hate how the srt-4's came with 205's.

where is a good place to buy a good set of spacers?

225! EEEK.

I'm running 215 without spacers, and trust me, it was a bitch to resolve on Tokio struts/springs meant for an SRT.

Being a fellow Jeep guy, I am well aware of our stigma against spacers, but you gotta figure, this idea of spacers is practically "shims" compared to what we're used to.

I like em'. Color change w/ a small drop and you'lll be sittin' pretty.

BTW, not to threawd hijack, what kinda Jeep?

Haha Im a Jeep guy too! I have a 94 ZJ.

Anyways Modern Performance sells spacers and their customer service is top notch. Other then that Jegs or Summit Racing are both good too.

IMO 225's look silly and are to much tire for a neon. I would go with a 215.

yeah true. when i think spacers, i think those 1" spacers haha so the 10 mm should be ok haha and i do want to paint them. i like the gunmetal look on black cars.. we'll see.. anyone have opinions on color of wheels on a black car? pics?

as far as the jeep..

'05 wrangler X 4.0, 6 speed, 74000 mi, 3.5 suspension, 1" body, 33x12.5x15 pro comp mud's, exhaust pipe intake, Banks monster cat back, made my own bumpers, soon to be sitting on 35's with D60 8 lug axles and a custom 5.5 or 6" long arm. (D30 and D35 with 3.07's dont like the 33's.... so 4 rear diffs later, i bought D60's)

lol actually I recently received a message from MPx talking about spacer out of stock. But they will make it stock soon.

Those wheels looks nice though! But I personally don't like any wheels bigger than 17"...

If possible you should run 215/35 on those. I live in NY (pothole capital of the world) and I havent had a problem with them. You would not need spacers and there would be no rubbing at all.

no no i have to argue that one lol i live in westfield. it's so bad here, my buddy tore a control arm off his car driving down the main rt. 20 going through town haha i think if my jeep didnt have 33's i'd prob have a lot of flats hahaha i'm gonna try running the tires that are on the rims for now with spacers and just see what happens.. the tires need to be replaced so i will see if they have any issues. so depending on that, i will either buy new 225/40's or 215/40's

Don't forget longer studs. You will be pushing your luck if you don't put longer wheel studs in, especially with the amount of potholes you say you have.
