I use, basically, a 12" x 15" sketchpad with some Kimberly pencils. Very smooth, better size to get you a better feel for the actual look, and much more time consuming to draw on. That's a personal preference for me, but I want my drawings to look exactly as I want them. Those aren't bad for rough sketches, but you'll get a greater response when your lines and ideas are crisp and sharp. Gives a much better indication.
I know doing the hood in Sharpie is actually a cheap and fun mod, but I would honestly get a second hood. I've got my SRT hood that I sport daily, but I've still got my OE hood, colormatched as well. Best thing to do is have the spare not only for practice, but it gives you unlimited time to work on it and perfect, AND you don't have to have it on the car all the time. I know after a few days, mine would come off. I just get bored that easily. Also, makes it easier to yank it off, wipe it clean, and slap a new idea on it
