HID lights turning purple

Post by SP33DN3ON » Thu Mar 25, 2010 2:40 am

Hey there guys/gals!
Need your help with the following:

Got an 10K HID kit about 2 weeks ago. (Deep blue light)
Light output is still the same but the actual light is turning into this purple crap that I don't really enjoy.

Do you think my HID bulbs are already going out, or I got some other problem?

Thanks again!

12K HID looks purple/violet actually.

Maybe you ordered the wrong bulbs?

Did you wait for them to warm up? They will look purple when you first turn them on, then they will get lighter and get blue.

Where did you get the HID kit? eBay? VVME?

They aren't going out but like everybody said, did you order the right bulbs, cause I know that the higher the number, the darker it gets like more purplish, I've got 6000K HID's on my SRT and the light beam is white with a hint of blue.

I got them on eBay (but spend $100 for the kit)
You guys are right they do look purple at first when I start them, but now they look the same color even after a 20 minute drive at night :(

p.s. Great write-up glasswars, I had to drill 3/8 hole in my headlight housing so the bulb can actually fit haha!

^Since it's ebay, I assume it's probably the seller sent you the wrong temp bulb. If it won't turn deep blue then it's 12K...

it might be the quality of the bulbs. i had 8k and stayed the same color for about a year than i wanted something darker soi bought some 12ks, they were cheaper brand and lost color in bout 2 months.

IMO, 10K will be fairly close to purple anyway. It's waaaay too ricer of a bulb. 4300K-6000K is what you should be looking for if you truly want to increase visibility.

$100 for a HID kit is probably too expensive. I got mine for 40 shipped and they never change the color. I wonder if the HID bulb will change the color spontaneously (unless during warm up)... If the HID dies it will flash and blinker then out right?...

For the color temp, I suggest 6000K which is bright white. But for best output 4300K is the one.

6k is actually white with blue tint. 5k is white. 4300 is white with yellow tint.

^^ This guy. That range is probably the best to use if you're trying to get good visibility. If you got 10k or higher, you're probably looking for the color just to look cool. Your visibility will not be any greater than stock IMO and you'll get some thumbs up from local ricers and thumbs down (or some paperwork) from da fudge.
