Completed the SRT front brake swap

Post by sRTin203 » Fri Apr 02, 2010 8:07 pm

Car - 2005 Neon Sxt (SRT-Design package)
So I used the list here for my SRT-4 front brake swap. It was the last thing needed for it. Also did mopar stage 3 suspension while I was at it.
Now the list called for the following items
*SRT-4 Brake Calipers
*SRT-4 Knuckles
*SRT-4 Power Steering Rack and Pinion
*SRT-4 Brake Pads
*SRT-4 Brake Hoses
*SRT-4 Brake Rotors

Now after removing everything and starting with the power steering rack, I found out they are IDENTICAL. Not one piece is different on the rack. It is not shorter in anyway. In fact, they have the same part number. I wish I looked into that earlier before spending the money on one.

EDIT: The brake hoses are the same, but the ends are differen't. (Where they bolt to the caliper) thats why the reman site listed them as the same but the complete lines are entirely different. You will need the SRT-4 flex hoses for the swap.

My father is a technician for Mopar, so I ordered all my parts new from the dealer (besides the rotors)

I'm just curious as to who did the first swap or who stated that these parts were "mandatory" and would like some proof.

I will post pictures of the completed swap tomorrow morning.

Just figured I'd let everyone know in case they were planning on doing this so they could save some money.
Again this was in a 2005 neon sxt (srt-design package)

I wonder if they used the same rack on the srt-d neons. I believe I seen that the sxt racks are different from the srt. This would be nice to know because I also plan on doing this swap.

They look exactly the same, but they have different turning ratios and tie rods are different lengths. Though maybe there is something up with the SRTD package....

In your orignial post you say that the racks are the same part number. What vehicles did you look up for and what year ? Just curious. I don't recall there being a srt-d option when looking for parts, but I also didn't look for racks. That would be nice if the srt-d's came stock with srt4 racks. I can see the gearing inside could be different and not noticeable, but would they really be shorter in overall length. Even if the tie rods are a different length, wouldn't they still have to be stretched to be the same wheelbase. Is the srt4's wheelbase different then ?

The part numbers were off a remanufactured parts website. I double checked the calipers and knuckles from the SRT and SXT to make sure the site did not list everything for a dodge neon as the same. The power steering racks are both 48" long.
That could be true about the SRT-d tho because my car did have the SRT washer bottle and quite a few other factory SRT-4 parts.

I would not trust a reman. site. Or any aftermarket parts supplier. They also list the brake boosters as the same part. They are not. They may work, but they are not exactly the same.

PN Request thread for steering racks:
viewtopic.php?t=33093

Edit: It needs the washer bottle because of the front fascia.

I doubt the rack is the same, otherwise the brakes/knuckles would already have been SRT pieces.

I know from actually doing the brake swap that the front brake lines are not the same. Non SRT brake lines will not work. Also I just ran out to my deck and looked at the steering racks I have one of each laying down on my shelf and they do have different part numbers. Now is it different for a srt-d ... I dont know about the racks but that would be weird if it was the same as an srt, but I do know that the brakes are the same as a base neon so the brake lines should be different than an srt.

^^ the list was not created by one person, it was created by people on this site who completed the swap. The parts on the list are "mandatory" for one reason or another some more obvious than others. The proof is all of us that are running the brake swap without any issues and that list has made it easier for new people to do the swap and not have to run back and forth from the parts store trying to figure out what they need.

yes you are correct, when attempting to replace the brake line (hose) the ends were different. The reman site did not include the ends that connect to the caliper. My fault for trusting a reman site. However, the racks were identical. Could this be because of the SRT-D or possibly even because it is a 2005? I'm just curious, there were no issues with my car with the previous owner that i'm aware of where it could have been replaced.

And yeah the washer bottle was for the facia but I was just stating that some parts off the SRT-4 were on this model.

After all that, the brakes came out great I love em.
Thanks for the parts list too because I would never have been able to do it without that.

The R/T's had longer inner tie rods and required cutting or replacing when doing the brake swap, SRT-4's and normal Neons use the same inner tie rods.

either SRT-D and SRT racks really are the same, or you ordered the wrong one because you got the PNs from a reman site. My question is, if your father is a tech why didn't you just have him log into Dealer Connect and look up the PN for you?

What PN DID you use for the SRT rack? That way we can see if our SXT ones have a different PN than your SRT-D

I'm fairly certain if you had the SXT rack with SRT brakes you wouldn't be able to align your car properly so you'd know it's off. That's what I've gathered anyway. I've not done the swap.

You guys know this is from last April right? The OP hasn't been on since Aug 2010
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...
