Laptops, never trust electronics.....

you sure got a point there! if you know the info and data you have stored is pricey/priceless, why not back up on a regular basis?

The sad part is I was talking to my parents about that the other day and I considered getting an external just in case, but I figured since its only 3 months old I should not have to worry....Marcel wrote:you sure got a point there! if you know the info and data you have stored is pricey/priceless, why not back up on a regular basis?
<<<kicks self for think that
Hmmm, so i see that it all was not DELLs fault.
Harddrive fucked up and they send you a new one very quick.
So i think DELL acted very professional and very helpfull in this situation. So the problem is not DELL - cause hardware can die for many reasons (and i am pretty sure that the harddrive is not made by DELL - it comes from another company. they just put all the delivered parts together).
The problem is your data security. Or better UNsecurity.
Especially for business use you absolutely NEED a copy of all your DATA on a server, tape or whatever.
And that must be updated in regular interveals. Like a daily update or that.
Too many things that can happen with your data. Especially on a laptop that can be lost, stolen, broken or whatever. NEVER let a laptop be the one and only storage location for ANY data!
So don't blame DELL for your negligence!

yeah i'd say take it like a man and pay the recovery cost yourself. It's a shame though you had to learn the hard way, but my guess is you'll buy a backup device before the end of the week
Anyway, good luck man, i hope you'll get all your data back!

Too add to my original post. We received the second computer today, almost a month later.
Read my earlier post for all of the original info.
This was the same computer, but it wasn't supposed to have the problems. They said it took them a month because they were inspecting this one thoroughly.
We get the computer all setup, run through the initial setup screen and windows comes up and does the usual updates and shit. Well the computer shuts off. Doesn't restart like the other one does, just shuts off. Turn the computer back on, windows loads up and it starts making some weird noises through the speakers, like muffled, the screen flashes around, the computer gets real loud and it shuts back off.
Very pissed atm.

The home server thing I've already done, my problem was if I needed a
"Insert Name" program that was 500mb-1gb in size it took too long to download so thats why I picked up a laptop that had a 500GB hd.
Currently I have an external 500GB Seagate hd that will be used as a backup of the "Toshiba" hd thats currently inside my laptop. And I got another estimate from another data recovery place yesterday, $500 with a standard $99 diagnostic. Well the price is much better, but I'm going to contact the hd manufacturer to see if I can get any support from them on either replacement parts or data recovery....

I still do not recomend anyone to buy a dell, the acer's I bought in the past year are still working perfectly with no issues what so ever. Heck, a guy I work with is harrasing me now because his eMachines laptop is working flawlessly.Jenni wrote:oho - someone edited the topic...
At this moment I shipped my HD to a place in the NYC area for data recovery, I was quoted $300-$3000 they stated there is a free charge for diag and right now this is the cheapest data recovery place I have found....
I will not send the hd to Dell because of the info on the hd...I'll see what happens......

Devices fail all the time and most certainly hard drives have a long history of failing hence the reason for data backup being generally considered a good idea.
Dell does not manufacture the hard drive units going into their systems so blaming them for the hard drive failure is like blaming Chrysler for a tire blowout on your Neon.

Didn't you learn from your CD-RW mistake that you probably wont get lost data back?BlackRoseRacing wrote:I still do not recomend anyone to buy a dell, the acer's I bought in the past year are still working perfectly with no issues what so ever. So unsurprisingly a HD took a dump. Pretty sure no matter what brand of computer you buy or the age of it this happens pretty commonly. Because you didn't back up your info it's Dell's fault? If the data was really that critical it should have been backed up, no exception. I lost my main desktop due to a virus less than a month before my degree project was due to graduate university. Life went on - I had data stored on a separate partition, and then backed up the data again. To boot the most current working files were normally on my flash disk as well. Just used another computer and life was good.
I've never been a hippie fan of Dell's, but everywhere I've worked has always used them. Usually pretty stout machines, but then again so has every non-dell computer I've used as well. Right now for work I have an E6500 laptop with the extra capacity battery. Not something I would buy for myself, but it's definately a tank.

No kiddy porn, sorry.....
The data is pretty much a collection of software from the past 10years worth of working on computers for work/friends/family. Which includes a copy of every Windows OS with a legit serial, Apple OS's,Linux OS's, programs from Adobe, CAD software, Office sweet's, software to create characters like Pixar uses in there movies, Video editing, Audio editing....
The list is too long to remember, but this also included all the info and backups of all the pc's I worked on which inlcuded personal information of the owners.....
I don't want to send it to Dell for the reasons above, they may question why I have a copy of all the OS's......

I must unfortunately advise that despite our best efforts we are unable to salvage any functional contiguous data from your hard disk drive above.
The drive has suffered the following problem/failure:
Severe head crash wherein one search head has come in contact with
(crashed into) the drive’s platter stripping the Angstrom coating from its
surface and destroying all data in those locations.
Media corruption wherein debris from the original contact has migrated
throughout the media destroying virtually a majority of the logical file
structures, rendering the data unrecoverable
