Custom Satnav Mounting

Post by nerox » Sun Apr 04, 2010 4:52 pm

just wondering if anyone has found a clever way to mount their satnav / gps into the car, i dont really like mine just being stuck to the window in such an untidy way so looking for a permanent fixture

this is an old pic, and i have changed units and cleaned up the wiring but it will give you an idea. i mounted one of those plastic discs that they come with on the underside of the dash overhang. i plan on building a little fiberglass enclosure that will sit in the tray area later this summer but it is way down on my list of projects this year.

I hate that stuck-on-the-windshield look too and often times the mount falls off while I'm driving... I wanted to fab up a mount for it to look OEM on the A pillar. I had this idea after seeing the new Cobalt SS which has a square digital gauge display mounted there, about the same size as a GPS.

Passenger eject button.

I just use one of those weighted mounts, and set it where ever it works best. No sticking a mounting disc, or having it on the windshield for me. It works pretty well, as long as the dashboard isn't too dusty, otherwise it will slide.

I added a power outlet inside of the fuse panel area with an add-a-circuit to an always on fuse, ran the cable up and under the dash pad and it comes out of the hole for the VIN plate. GPS is mounted to the window in the lower left corner.

I've got my power wire ran through the pillar. Got a multi-cigarette lighter plug spliced in the fuse area (interior one).

I have mine mounted upside-down to the area between the defrost button and cig lighter. I don't like crap up in my face, so having it down by the shifter keeps it still within distance to spot directions and change info quickly.
