pain pumping fuel

Post by gtxtreme19 » Tue Apr 06, 2010 6:15 pm

So I've had the neon for a while now andhate having to pump gasoline because everytime I do the pumps no matter what station im at they shut off about every 15 seconds unless im only squeezing about half trigger. I always chalked it up to me owning a small car and im used to trucks with huge filler necks or fuel cell, but today I pulled in next to another 2gn and his was doing the same thing!
Does anyone else have this problem, is there a way to make it stop?

never had the problem with the Neon...

Did have that problem with a 1998 Hyundai Elanta... happened as soon as I bought the thing and drove it off the lot to get gas! Couldn't even get hardly ANY gas in. At first they told me I couldn't fill up at certain stations! (Ha!)

Took it back like 3 times before they did SOMETHING...don't even remember what it was, but think they actually replaced the filler neck eventually!

Prolly due to the small filler neck. I rarely put it past the first click. There are some stations that don't maintain the filters in their pumps, but those won't let you even get to the first click. I just hang it up, pay the .50 or w/e and tell them when they fix their pumps I might return.

The vent tube could be blocked, so the air is bubbling up the filler tube. But that generally won't let you get it to the fist click either.

Basically if you are having trouble past halfway, the volume is prolly greater than what our filler tubes will handle.

If you have one of those Stant caps with the fill hole built in, it isn't going to let fuel in either. Those were a great idea, but a piss poor product.

A lot of it depends on how fast the fuel is flowing. Some stations around me have the flow set to blow the bottom of the tank out, while others barely flow at all.

I just put it on the first click, and go. I am not in that big of a hurry to hand over my $. It might only make a minute's difference anyways.

Ya whenever it's happened to me it was when I could hear it flowing more then usual. I find the angle can help with that. I angle the front of the nozzle up in the filler neck.

I also have this issue, it seems to be related to the pump itself and not our cars filler necks, since this problem only arises on certain pump stations. This is why I hate filling up at random gas stations, which is why I always get gas at the same place and the same pump..

x3? 4?

But yes, what they said. Car good, pump bad.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I find it to be a particular stations nozzle most of the time. Happens on my truck.

it happened to me on a rental once.
guy told me to wait a full minute after removing the cap to let the fumes vent. i couldnt understand the logic behind that, but i did as he suggested and it worked.

That dont seem logical, just pump slower and get the same outcome just a hair faster.
I have to use the first click I tried pulling it out further and pointing it up but no dice. Slow and steady I guess

If you think it's bad on a Neon, how about filling up two 20 gallon tanks $0.02 at a time :P

I fixed a Neon that was filling VERY slowly. Turned out that someone rolled and stuffed an entire newspaper page in the filler tube.

Wow someone was not happy with someone! Mine isn't that slow but I tried a different filling station today and it still clicked off trying to go too fast. First click is win

you can try pulling the gas nozzle out just a bit.
i worked at a gas station for a few years and when someone put the nozzle in to far or out to much it would click off.

also ive never had a problem with filling mine up ever. just wishing the gas gauge in the car was more accurate.

I had this problem with my current 02 r/t. after doing much research I found the answer to my problem over on the srtforums. was a bad onboard refueling vapor recovery valve that is on the top of the tank. It got stuck closed so would not allow the pressure in the tank to vent i guess so would only allow about 1-2 gallons in before shutting the gas nozzle off. wait a few seconds, pump a couple more gallons. had to replace the entire gas tank to fix the problem. Got mine from a junk yard and works perfect now.
