I hope you terrible sq on an ALPINE headunit.

maybe on their 150 dollar decks. Their High end decks and the imprint system are excellent

i am just speaking from experience. i had an ida-x001 and an ida-x100 w/ imprint and both of them sounded like garbage. my cda-7998 sounds excellent and so did my cda-9887, thus my statement about avoiding the ida line of alpine headunits.

this all from a die-hard alpine fan. one car has spx-177r, spr-69c, swx-1243, pdx 4.100 and pdx 1.1000 (kenwood hu). the other has cda-7998, spx-177r and a pdx5 (sundown subs).

ahhh didnt see the ida part. My bad.

I have had alpine units since i could drive so I know they have had their ups and downs just as any other company.

To be honest i was never a fan of their speakers but thats just from my experience.

For speakers I would say a toss up between the focals and the jl c2's. I love the way the jl's sound

I have memphis Msync's in the front doors and dash (removable tweeter ftw) and memphis M-class 6x9s in the rear deck and Ive put over 200 watts rms to each one and still had perfect clarity. I absolutely LOVE them

I recently bought a pioneer DEH-2100IB head unit, with the iPod dock connector. I really like this model.

I use the built-in amplifier, so I wasn't too picky about it lacking front pre-outs. Maybe consider something higher up in this line with front pre-outs and blueooth...

I can definitely say that it is one of the nicer radios that I have used. It works like a charm with my iPod Touch and my buddies have plugged their iPod Nano's into it a few times. Works great.

my girlfriend has a pioneer unit and it's really good. The only reason i want to buy clarion is that i think its pretty much the only car stereo make i haven't owned before

Ok so i have gone for something a bit different but the magnet on the mid / door speaker is HUGE!!!

Distance from the mounting point to the back of the magnet is about 3.5" and of course we have some clearance as standard.

does anyone know how much clearance there is normally and therefore how far im gonna have to space them out to stop the window fouling

There is decent room in the fronts as the plastic panel kicks out the speaker a lil bit...I wanna say my earthquake componenets had a HUGE magnet and they barely fit...I wanna say 4in depth... I never measured anything so i cant say for sure...Worse case mount them on the door panel like some have done....Its a matter of cutting out the grille and triming as you fit them up....up to you...Just as long as they come w/ their own grills so you dont punch a whole through them on the first day.

They don't come with grilles unfortunately, and i have no objection cutting / spacing behind the door panel but not too sure of cutting the standard grille off

i have measured it up and it needs 25mm of spacing away from the factory so i have ordered some custom spacers ... hopefully it won't foul on the door-panel grille but if it does i will address the issue by cutting it out and seeing what i can do.
