Post by Mat00ES » Thu Apr 08, 2010 11:42 pm

ok, after dipping my car in the mini lake of a puddle, Ive been collecting parts for a swap of the 2.4T kind. So, the motor I will be using is out of a gt pt, with the 4 speed auto. I'll most likely be staying with a 3 speed auto, with a high stall torque converter and an external cooler. Now, I will be changing the body/engine harness and running an srt4 pcm. Thats the basic plan, Im gonna work out the details as the days go on. I don't want the car to be a crazy beast, just a little more go. Any help/advice or pointing flaws in my plan would be awesome.
Thanks.

I take it that this is not your only daily car ?

I'd say that having another / 2nd car to drive while you undertake the project would be step # 1.

Would you be able to use the srt pcm while using a 3spd?

Yes. The PCM will not know if there was a NV4500 trans attached. Other than a VSS, there isn't any input to the PCM as far as that goes.

Unless the PCM needs a reverse light input for some reason. .

The GT PT pcm would have issues with the 31th atx tho. ;)

Yep its my daily, the plan is to have it done in 3-4 days once I gather all the parts. I've always heard that the 3 speeds are better then the 4 speeds, so that was my reasoning behind that.

There was a user on here who had done an SRT swap but kept the 3 speed trans. This is going to be easier than using the PT GT ecu and the 41te trans. It would probably be the best if you could locate a 3.55 trans and use a high performance clutch, but the high stall converter will be fun with the SRT power.

Yes. The only difference is you will not have the power wire for the stock SRT boost gauge, but if you're doing a swap, you can upgrade to whatever gauge setup you want.

the 3spd tranny doesnt require any computer imput... other than Torque convertor lockup solenoid. which can be controlled via a nitrous window switch!

Or with a regular on-off switch. Or you can do away with the lockup, but you lose a little on the highway.

3 speed is the way to go if you want to stay auto. i don't recommend it tho if you only have a few days, a stock 3 speed wont last long with that much power. you are better off with a 350mtx and a better clutch. (turned down srt or stage 3 clutch masters)

I would get the tranny upgraded some, you don't need to go all out with a Steve Kalitta transmission, just some upgraded parts.

I would go with something that automatically shuts off. You don't want it to be on when coming to a stop/emergency situation. A latching relay set up that kicks out with a brake signal would work, but you would need to remember to turn it back on.

If anything I would go with a window switch, that only works in Drive, maybe 2nd gear, if you want to use that for snow traction with a RMVB. Then an on/off to bypass it if you wanted. This would require some micro switches on the shifter tho.

The other drawback with no lock up, is it will run hotter on the freeway. But a cooler will help there, but it pretty muchis a requirement in that situation anyways. A cooler, shift kit, at the bare minimum. You don't want smooth shifts. The clutch packs will need to be at full engagement as quickly as possible.

Anyone know of a place to get a shift kit? As of right now the plans for the tranny are external cooler, and a high stall TC. I found an srt to get the full body harness off of, anything else I should try to get while I'm getting the harness's?

Man, PM RacerSteve over on neons.org about what he would do. He's the auto man. He'll even build a trans for you. You could look into getting a no-lockup converter from an older turbo dodge.

If you swap the srt tranny you need to make holes for the clutch cylinder, which I think you can just steal plate from the srt firewall.
