Here's my recently completed list. All 100% brand new parts after searching around for the best deals.

Pioneer AVIC-X910BT - $349.99 (retails $550+)
2x Alpine SWS-1023D - $67 each (retails $80+)
Alpine PDX-1.600 Amp - $223.48 (retails $250+)
PAC SWI-PS - $42.66 (steering wheel controls, retails $45+)
Pioneer CD-IU23OV (ipod hookup) - $37.38 (price dropped a ton since i bought this. wasted about $15)
Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness - $7.50
Metra 95-8202 Toyota DDIN Multi Dash Kit - $13.53
Elemental Designs Underseat Boxes (could of went much cheaper DIY) - $191.44
KnuKonceptz 4g Amp Kit - $36.80

Needless to say, proper car audio is FAR from cheap, but with enough effort, good deals can be had.

:withstupid: THIS! I have spent nearly $2000 on everything in my car audio wise (take a look at my garage.)

If you buy a system for $350 i wouldn't even get a sub. Just buy a decent headunit, 6 1/2s in the front and 6x9 in the rear and add good 4 channel amp. If you really want an sub...you need to save your money and don't buy a wal-mart 5000000 watt sony xplod amp that is complete crap.

So, if your going new, look for year end close outs at discounted prices. For Instance, my end of the year, is July 1st. I am putting a lot of my products that don't move fast around 30% off retail, so I don't have to account for the taxes on them. Don't forget to support local businesses, when possible.

brick and mortar shops are on the way out unfortunately. they just can't compete with online pricing and to be honest most of the local shops i have gone to in my time do the same thing - push whatever line they make the most profit on, not necessarily what is best for the customer or even what the customer wants. i have no idea who you are or what your shop is like but the good ones (in terms of brand, inventory and installation) are few and far between. personally i would not let any of the 5 or so local shops (and by local i mean within a 30 min drive) touch any car i own after seeing their installs.
