what brand coilovers to buy

Post by TODD01R/T » Sat Apr 10, 2010 12:55 am

I'm looking at getting a set of coilovers. I would like to be able to lower my car an inch or so as well as keeping the same ride quality as I have now with my 01 R/T. This is my daily driver/ commuter so I'm not looking for a total race setup or anything like that just somthing that I can adjust the ride hight and can bear driving for a couple hours a day. I was looking at BC coilovers or a set of Mopar stage 2. Any others I sould be looking into? any comments or advice would be appriciated.

BCs are decent enough for the cost. Plus you get all the adjustable features to set it up anyway you pretty much desire.

Do the BC's have a close to stock R/T ride quality, not too harsh?

depends how you set them,

if you have them set like me , a "stock" feeling ride is too bounce and i would est the ground more then i do now.

but they can be set to be pretty comfortable

I'd say Mopar S2 since the price just dropped to $900 and you said you don't want to slam the car and you want a good ride.

If I went with the mopars, would I still need to use the top mount plates that has a bearing in them that I currently use with my stock setup or does the Moper coilovers fit right in? Would I need to buy anything else to go with coilovers to install them? Where is a good place to buy them as well. Modern performance Thanks?

Yeah, you still have to use the OEM top hats for the Mopar S2s. Modern is the cheapest place to get them. Or there is a guy selling some new in box for $900 shipped.

How would I attatch the OEM top caps on to these? I know for a stock strut setup I would need spring compressors and would be fussing with the two differend sized nuts at the top and all that. I need to buy new top plates ayway, I suspect that's where the frond end clunking is coming from. I appoligyse for all the questions but I'm just trying to wiegh my options and ultimatly in the end, be VERY happy with my choice. I'm kind of stuck between the Mopar and the BC Coilovers. Mopars are a good price but i wll have to buy and install new top plates. BC 's arn't as good as the Mopars but have more adjustment options and come with everything put together and all I would have to do is thow them in. Am I wrong in this last statment??? Please let me know.

thanks... Todd

They're made by KW... The quality of the damper is better than the cheap Asian coils. I don't think many people will dispute that fact. That's not to say Megans or BCs aren't good, they are. KWs/Mopar are just a higher quality item.

^^ +1 and now that the KW's are only $900 dollars they are higher quality and cheaper.

let me throw my 2 cents in. The kw are indeed better as far as valving and being a better overall damper. however they will not compare to the bc's unless you buy a set of adjustable strut mounts therefore bringing the price back up above that of the bc's. The other issue is you can not lower them much at all or they will blow because the height adjustment isn't independent of the preload. Until kw makes a coil with a threaded lower knuckle bracket the bc's will still come out on top as far as price for the options go.
Yup it definately needs to go lower. If its not scrapeing constantly why you are driving then its not low enough bro.
