Coolant spilling out at cap.
Coolant spilling out at cap.
I think its the fourth time this has happened on the SRT in 2.5 years. My cap keeps popping off and the coolant goes everywhere. It happens a mile or so down the road after I get into mild boost(~20psi). Each time I have to go buy a new belt and while I'm at it I get a new cap too. I'm sick of this happening. Any one have a reason as to why? My ideas are bad cap, solild mounts vibrating it off, air in line and some one suggested head gasket problem. Does this happen to anyone else or have a solution to stopping this?

Are the locking tabs worn on the neck? Most caps need to be pressed down to lock in place. The only way I can see it releasing it self, is if the locking tabs are worn off, and it is able to turn. Otherwise it would have to pushed down to clear the locking tabs. I don't see any kind of vibration/HG leak doing that. I would think with enough pressure, the bypass would just flood the overflow tank.
Or the line may come off and squirt coolant. But not the cap coming loose. If the bypass was not working, it would blow the radiator out. Possibly the filler neck has a crack that is letting go when the bypass is pushed off the seat.

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.

The cap locks nice and tight. I've got the old style AGP over flow tank for my coolant. That might be a problem also. I'm just at a loss as to why this happens so often but with months and months inbetween.

if there was air in the line, wouldnt it just make its way to the overflow / coolant tank and burp itself out the overflow?titansxt wrote:My ideas are ... air in line
Does your AGP surge tank have an actual overflow line at the top? Too much coolant in the system for the reduced capacity maybe, causing excess pressure? A head gasket issue is also a strong possibility.

I'm saying no on the head gasket. My oil is really healthy looking (not milky) and when I got my analysis back there was no sign of coolant. I'm thinking the AGP coolant tank was too full to accept the coolant coming in. I squeezed my top radiator line today while working on the car and the coolant was not going anywhere. So I nearly cleaned out the overflow and tried the process again and the coolant was actually leaving the filler neck and going to the tank.

I used to run a 20lb (very wrong I know the garage guy did it on purpose in my opinion) on my 00ES and the pressure blows up the upper coolant hose and the radiator. Antifreeze spilled everywhere in the engine bay. Could that be the case? If so maybe lower the cap pressure will help.

Nope, it was litterly the cap coming undone from the neck. Chrysler has a new style cap out, I think its 16lbs, a black plastic vs the old metal 17lbs one. Or maybe its new one 17 and old one 18. What ever the case is, the new cap looks great and is one pound less than the old style.

I have that new cap... it is black plastic over a metal base and is 1 lb greater pressure than the old metal cap... at least here in Canada.titansxt wrote:Nope, it was litterly the cap coming undone from the neck. I've had it installed for over a year now with no issues.
