You know what really sucks?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

When you go to change the transmission fluid and this is all that comes out. It was pitch black and smelled like death. This was done a day before my axle tried to escape last year.

Maybe it wants to be good oil and not leave it's work area?

^^ Yeh trans fluid is totally overrated anyway

We tracked the problem to the right axle seal. Replaced the seal and added friction modifier with 3 quarts of ATF+ and I'm good to go. Quieted down the throwout bearing too; that damn thing sounded like it was about to explode

The friction modifier and ATF was such a bad move on Chryslers part. It's an inferior fluid to even Pennzoil Synchromesh. The friction modifier will only hurt the organic seals in the transmission.

Also, changing transmission fluid shouldn't have an effect on the throwout bearing, since the bearing is not lubed by the transmission. You probably heard gear lash inside the transmission since there was no fluid.

Well the rattling noise stops when I push the clutch in. Several people have told me its the throwout bearing. After I changed the fluid, it got a lot quieter, which I thought was odd. Would gear lash stop when the clutch is engaged?

It would since pushing in the clutch disconnects the engine from the trans.

So if it really is gear lash, is it a normal thing? Should I be worried about it if it's loud enough for me to hear?

Yes, yes, it's my own dumbass fault. But should I be worried about this rattling noise?

Worried? I wouldn't think so...till something goes wrong.

Mine has some noise as well, mostly when cold. But other than the noise I have had no problems out of it.

I'd see how it does with some fluid in it first. The noise will probably go away.

The noise is still there, it's just a lot quieter after I filled the transmission. It's been doing it since I bought the car in June '07 but I've never noticed a degradation in performance. Then again, if this POS isn't making noises then something IS wrong.

True, they are just saving energy for a bigger noise.

and the fiberide linings on the synchros. I'd even go so far as to suggest draining it and refilling WITHOUT the dreaded friction modifier. Even New Venture / Magna does NOT suggest using the friction modifier.

the noise is more likely an internal problem. 99% of people think it's the throwout bearing and it's almost never the real problem. http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=356527
