IS My car going going gone

Post by Alex Kurdian » Mon Apr 19, 2010 11:41 pm

Hi Guys
I dropped the car in for a service and I have a couple of issues...

The power steering pressure hose is leaking...where from... they don't know until they take it off...it may need to be repaired or replaced...I think I will just replace it...But I hope I can get one from my contact in the states...It must be RHD as the aluminum is bent different to LHD...and the reason for this is they want 500 for the part here...!!!! FARKING ASSHOLES!!

But the worst of it is I have a slight oil leak...Looking at the engine from under the car where the head gasket seal is in the corner on the left..there is a small leak...enough to moisten the area and things on the way down but nothing on the ground....

should I be worried that the gasket will go? or its just normal stuff for a 9 year old car??

MAN I baby this car so much ! I cant win sometimes!

The HG leak, don't worry about it. Mine leaks worse than that. My PS hose also weeps, but it isn't enough to leave puddles. It has been that way for the last 80,000 miles I've driven it.

Yeah if worse come to worse convert the power steering rack to a full manual one, throw away the pump and enjoy a cleaner engine bay. It would be harder to steer but its not to bad. Once your moving its just a bit harder then normal. Its when your at a standstill or trying to parallel park that it becomes a PITA.

As far as the oil leak. Mine is doing that too. I think mine is the valve cover or cam sensor gasket weeping. Not enough to make a puddle but just enough to make the back of the block dirty.

For the P/S hose you might be able to make your own. Some steel brake line, bender, and flaring tool would be cheaper then $500 I think.

If you have a heavy equipment shop near you, they could prolly make the rubber part with fittings that you could connect the steel line to. IDK how the RH drive hose is, but my high pressuere lines are crimped one piece, but making them two piece would only require the fitting crimped to connect the hard line to. Good idea, Mopar_Korean.

I know that the SRTs are notorious for that oil issue you are talking about, even with new gaskets. So as long as it isn't dripping and puddling somewhere i wouldn't worry to much about it.

I guess that you could just put cardboard down on the garage/carport floor. Sorry that I'm not more helpful. :tardbang:

Wile were on the topic. I was wondering how hard it was to convert to a manual steering rack?

I am seriously considering this. I drove my friends '88 Civic with no PS and didn't think it was that bad.

Less is more

BTW I agree with the above. Just try and make your own PS line.

If you don't want P/S, I believe you take the pump off and loop the lines.

Slightly oil leaking is nothing to worry about. Mine leaks for a long time, lost 1 qt due to the oil leaking every 3k-5k miles.

Power steering line is very easy to fix. It was the first thing I actually fixed on a car on my own :)

But I want to get rid of it, can anyone else chime in about looping the lines? I heard after awhile you can ruin your steering column.

I don't know. I've had the PS delted in my 98 for a year and a half of driving, no issues. I deleted the PS in my 95 with no issue so far. Krackstar had the PS deleted in his 00 SRT swap, and broke a cheap ebay steering wheel. I think his PS is deleted in his new 1gn.

It just makes the resistance harder, but no unbearable unless you're a 80lb girl. The only time I had a hard time was when I was at a dead stop on drag radials at 20lbs of air.

You wouldn't ruin your steering column. The only thing that might happen, is if the fluid that's trapped in the system should leak, it might not get adequate lubrication in the steering gear. (Rack and Pinion)

Normally a leak would be noticeable from the noise coming from the pump when it is low. But since it won't be there, or at least running, there would be no immediately noticeable signs, unless it leaves a big puddle. There won't be any way to check the fluid level either, unless you fab a reservoir of some kind.

also watch that some inspection stations will fail you for looped lines, NYS requires a vehicle equipped with power steering, it has to be fully functional

Slight oil leaks with no/hardly any residue on the ground are not a huge issue. Keep your eye on it from time to time. Unfortunately we gets stupid annoying leaks from time to time that don't really hurt us.
