wideband is blue now!

Post by Jenni » Fri Apr 23, 2010 3:01 pm

As you maybe know i bought an used wideband.
With red digits.
But i really dislike red light in my car - so i had to find a way to make it blue.
First problem:
Finding blue lighted 7 digit led displays.
I found them.

Hmmm, grey, but who cares...

But i had some very very very big problems!
- it was a pita to remove the old digits
- the new digits are 1mm bigger
- and so are also the contacts
- the circuit board from the new digits (pin assignment) is different - 3 pins are different - and to rearrange that was a very big problem. I had to cut some conducting paths and rewire the circuit board.
I can say that was the absolutely most complicated soldering job i ever made (and i soldered cellphones to blue light and many more freaking small things)!
I guess i will not do that again (but hmmm, i still have a set digits left...)
So i cannot give you a how-to, this project is top of PRO-league!

But here are some pictures of the modified circuit board with the rewiring and some light output pictures.

I worked in summary ~10 hours on it - and for just 3 digits thats dammit much!!! (I change the smd leds in a cellphone in ~30 minutes....)
I think you can understand how proud i am now!
I hope you like it also.
(And: Yes i know, now they sell that also with blue digits, but it was very cheap and used...)

oh it is worth! definitely!
if everything in the car is blue lighted - even the skin for the mp3-player in my tv - red digits would look totally misplaced!
I like to have it blue - and if you look at my older jobs you will see that i spend a lot of time and brain for that.

I lighted in blue cellphones (the old models with the green light), the switches in many radios, home hifi, different speedos whatever you can imagine were a light is in - and all that >10 years ago when blue LEDs were very rare and expensive!
And all that was complicated (example: green LEDs in cellphone work with 2.3V, the blue with 3.2 - how to raise the voltage now??)...
I modified LCD displays with EL-lighting - they were green lighted with black letters and i lighted them blue with white letters. Therefor i had to remove the polarisation film on the display!

So if I really wanna have that (or someone else is asking me) - I will do it...

The result is worth the stress.

And hmmm - i guess for the next wideband i will need less than half the time...

Dammit the old aem gauges are soooo stupid - the wires are directly installed to the gauge - so i cannot just plug them out to remove the dashboard cover.
But gladly i noticed that BEFORE it was to late...
