Maybe 3rd time is the charm

Post by hansken_yo » Mon Apr 26, 2010 2:45 pm

The story of my life. After all my hard work trying to accomplish yet another goal in life I did not get into the navy. I passed an audition, lost 35lbs, got my blood pressure under control and yet still was denied. I'm pretty bummed out about it and have to begin figuring what other thing in life I'll give a go at (hopefully with better results, shits gotta change sometime right?).

I had elevated Blood Pressure when I went in for my initial physical. I've been working hard to get that down and presented them with a doctor's note with 9 readings of it being below "high" levels, but I guess the history of my BP was the cause still. That is the best that I can discern since it was the only thing that was an issue.

That really sucks man... try a different branch.... I wouldn't mention anything about the blood pressure as you have it under control now and see what they say.

I was told that if you are DQ'd from one branch you can't do any other.

Degrees  AA Instrument Repair (something I found I absolutely hate doing), BA Music, MA Music.

Wait man! There is still a positive out of this...

-you lost 35 pounds
-got your blood pressure under control

Those are positives! Keep up the good work!

^I was going to say the exact same thing. Those are some awesome side affects.

Best of luck to ya man. My GF's dad has an MA in music too. He's been directing a high school band for >15 years. He's been looking for a different teaching job for a while now. Things are hard out there man.

Nah, go talk to an Air Force recruiter... tell him what you want to do and ask him how you go about it.

Don't mention anything about your old symptoms or anything of that nature.

It can't hurt much more than it already does. If they say no, Just hope they don't take too long about it.

If you keep beating on doors, one of them is going to come off the hinges.

Or your hand will be bruised. It's better than giving up before all your options are depleted.

When they are, step back, collect yourself, and make new options.

Enough with the rosy shit. Just keep grinding along, you'll get there. :)

There are always positives in something, I know, and the positive aspects are not a loss. I've accomplished a lot, proved things to people (just not the ones the count, eh). In the end I'm just really frustrated that I've put an enormous amount of effort and personal sacrifice to not real the goal... again.

I thought 3rd time was a charm.

Oh well, I don't need to be dwelling on this too long. Just need to find another direction to go now. :eekdance:

I take it the music business isn't the cash cow you thought it might be when you decided to get those degrees? Not to be rude or anything, but I can't say I'm surprised. These days, unless you're an engineer/producer or in a mainstream band, there isn't much money in the business. I kind of learned the same thing with the automotive industry after I graduated from UTI a few years ago. The fact that the economy crashed at the exact same time didn't help! I guess going to school for something you're passionate about isn't always necessarily the best idea.

I'm with John though, why not try the other branches?

While I'm really sorry that you didn't achieve your stated goal, I really envy what you have done for your physical health. Maintain what you have done in this area and be proud of it. Here's to you meeting success in the next avenue that you find yourself travelling in!

Wow, missed this thread. That sucks man, but the bright side, yadda yadda yadda.

Now knowing what degrees you have, yes school may help you. You can get a degree in something else besides music, and get a job in another field.

Unless you are completely dedicated to being a musician/working with music, in which case, you're fucked.

Well, my efforts (I really have given this 110%) have gone up through departments and I just got a call today about them giving me one last try, but I have to do my testing at their main facility here in Seattle.

I'll be attempting that here in 2 weeks so that I can try to loose more weight and hit 185. Its about 7 more lbs.

Just don't kill yourself trying to lose weight. That may take more out of you than could be beneficial.

Best of luck! :naka:

Funny you should say that since I pulled my hamstring a week before the testing.

Well they did some last minute changes to the testing, but whatever. I completed the testing today. My readings were acceptable and I got a recommendation for Waiver. This means the doctors at MEPS say I'm okay. This is still in the hands of the council that hands out waivers and can go either way. I'll know sometime in a week or so.

I'm at 195 =/

5'10" My max weight is 196, 185 was my goal. I'm a few shy not too far. The blood pressure was the issue. Hopefully I've shown them that it isn't one.

I can get up to 208 and I'm 73 inches for USMC standards.

If the Navy still denies your waver, you could always try the other branches like John said...the army can still be a good job, even with their extended deployments. The Coast Guard or Geological Survey or any other three letter government agencies are open to you since you have a bachelors degree...let alone a masters.

The only problem is that none of the services are hurting for recruits. The Marine Corps has a 10-15 month wait to go to boot camp...

I think if you actually got a waver sent up is a very encouraging sign.
