bypass valve
bypass valve
so i hydrolocked my neon a couple weeks ago but i have a rebuilt engine in now but i dont want to remove my k&n cai...so i was wonder do they have a bypass valve for them?
AEM makes a bypass valve that you can adapt to work on the K&N. Why not just avoid standing water? It's a car not a boat.

I don't blame them at all, hydrolocking an engine by driving into a huge puddle of water isn't going to be covered under warranty regardless of what intake you have on it.

^ Also, I believe people over-estimate driving with an aftermarket intake. You've gotta get that sucker into some REAL water. Splashing / puddles on a rainy day really gives a light chance oh hydrolocking, even though people flip because their "filters are like 3" from the ground!one!!!"
el. oh. el.
Indeed, it takes a real bad situation or more commonly a real dumb driver to get into enough water to fill a cylinder. People definitely make it into a bigger deal than it is too, it's a very avoidable event IMO.

You mean the filter boot? I'm sure it would help with the splashing, but not full submersion.

If you submerge the filter into water nothing can actually prevent hydrolock. If you drive your car into a lake that can reach your upper mount of the foglight or half of the wheel, then you got hydrolocked. But that situation is relatively very rare...
For the AEM bypass valve, I don't think it can fit the K&N CAI without modification. Since K&N used metal bracket to mount the TB and the tube of K&N is not straight. And the tube is mounted onto the air box mount too. So in this case the position for K&N CAI is fixed. For mine the edge of K&N tube is contacting with TB already. So unless the tube is cut, an AEM bypass valve will actually do nothing on the K&N. I guess K&N CAI come with the drycharger that can prevent splash of water as OB said, and just prevent car into a lake which is the most important thing.

We ran one on our FSAE car. In the rain it did help and sitting still you could see the water beading up on the drycharger and not getting absorbed into the filter or sucked through to the engine. But that was a high mounted fully exposed filter. Point is, bypass valve, no bypass valve, stock intake, whatever. Once you fully submerge any filter of a running engine you're in for a bit of work. May not loose the engine, but you're in for a nice night of flushing for sure.esfan wrote:Will the K&N drycharger help? Though I know hydrolock with CAI is totally avoidable.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

The K&N doesn't replace the bellows tube. Their 7-8HP gain claims are midrange, per dyno testing IIRC. Peak gains are 1-2HP like all the other CAI's.
I'm sure all the common run of the mill CAI's make the same gains. I wonder what the ICEMAN does with the powerband.

I guess the reason K&N do not replace the bellow tube is due to the fixed position of the throttle body needs a flexible bellow tube. However, does the straight bellow tube really matter a lot? Since a 5 inches distance of air travelling won't be affected a lot due to the rough surface of the tube right?
K&N didn't claim a huge increasing, just 5.3 HP at 4641 RPM which can be considered neglected actually. However the dyno result of each manufactures can be different. With the drycharger the air flow is most likely reduced by less than 10% as K&N claimed.

The stock bellows tube should in theory be terrible for air flow. Whether or not a straight tube would help power-wise is debatable.

The Dodge Neon is not, I repeat, is not a boat.

There is a filler in there, to smooth out/keep the bellows from collapsing. So it is not nearly as bad as it looks on the outside.OB wrote:The stock bellows tube should in theory be terrible for air flow. Whether or not a straight tube would help power-wise is debatable.
Just jam one of those "Tornados" in there (bellow tube), and get mad vortex gains.

me and manny both hydrolocked our engines. mat pet almost did as well i believe. I did it on my way back from Carlisle last year for our annual meet. I left at like 9pm for NY (6 hour trip). I didnt check the weather and had to be home for work the next morning. I got caught in heavy rain and flash flood warning. I ended up calling my boss to say i might have to stay in a hotel that night and as I was on the phone with her I hydrolocked in the middle of the interstate. thats how bad it was. People were driving like 15-20 mph on the interstate. i was trying to get off but it never happened. it blows. now i want my stock box back.
