You should definitely call a local shop.

By the time you get paint/materials that are quality, it will not be any cheaper than a regular body shop.

It took less than a year for the paint to oxidize and begin rusting when she took her car to Maaco. Might depend on the shop too, but that one convinced me to never go there.

I would rather suck it up, and make payments on my CC than get a crappy paint job. And I am super anal about being in debt. It is one of the few things that truly bugs me. I just have to convince myself which is the lesser of two evils.

I've always been told that if you go to Maaco, do all the prep work yourself and it'll come out pretty good.

i had my car painted by a guy that worked at macco. and id say don't do it. once a car gets a bad paint job, you end up taking it to the place you should have the first time, and it cost ALOT more than it would have. and i also have a buddy that got a car painted at macco and after a year it chipped off

This is what I have heard.
If the prep work is done wrong, the paint will, too.

If you're not prepared to do ALL - that means EVERYTHING- of the prep work yourself (all sanding, removing / masking trim, etc.)... don't expect it to come out right. :(

That being said, you might as well go to a 'regular' body shop, at that point, and have them spray it.....

Oh, and Paint (itself) is EXPENSIVE nowadays.
Just the materials themselves.... really expensive, not like it was 15-20 year ago.

Makes me wonder, where Maaco gets their paint from, to keep it so cheap.... :?

Thats funny, alot of my local paint shops are running alot of deals in this area I've seen $999 $799 even a $699 deal. With most of them being pretty reputable. As far as Maaco goes, I've seen people get decent results as long as they prep the car in advance.

teamlivid just had his car painted at maaco for $1500. Krackstar had his orange car painted at maaco too. Good enough for a show car, good enough for me.

This pic is exactly why i wouldn't, the caption on the pic is "look at the detail in the jamb!"

A money with a roll of tape could have made that jamb look better. its crooked as hell

A buddy of mine got his cavalier resprayed about a year and a half ago at maaco, and it was fisheyed and had orange peel. Now his fenders, the front edge of the hood and bottoms of the doors are peeling and rust is bubbling through where there wasn't rust before.

the previous owner of my old supra had it done at macco. the shit was so thin you could see the blue from the original paint job through the white. and it was hazy, no gloss at all in places.. and it was peeling within a few weeks. I could have rattle canned or rolled it with better results.
