Paint question

Post by strykr » Tue May 11, 2010 10:56 pm

I just purchased a brand new hood that is primered and was wondering if thats okay to drive with? Like wont rust easily?

Or should I spend $300 to get it painted to match the rest of my car (Silver) and clear coated?

Heres a link to the picture of the hood on the car

Ya its just $300 is kinda expensive:P

Im debating on either painting it gloss black along with roof and trunk or going with silver hood..

What you think looks nice.. I want a stockish look but also to look nice too

Depends on the kind of primer. I have primer on a part of my car and it's rusted through in two spots.

In the VA area I have been quoted 150 to 200 for a hood if that helps.

$300 is a bit pricy, but depending on how much the paint is, and if they try to blend it, etc, who knows.

unless it is epoxy primer it will absorb water, all other primers are porous

The primer that they put on there is just for shipping purposes. It will be complete rust with in 3 to 6 months. If nothing else put 5 coats of rattle can primer, and as many coats of color. You could wet sand it to make it look decent, then clear it, and wet sand/polish it. Then it may last.

Be sure to paint the shit out of the underside also. Spray it into the inner bracing at all angles, until it runs out. If you don't want to go through all that, then pay to get it done right.

A good quality job, doing both sides is going to be more than $300. But it might last more than a year before rust begins to form. That's about how long it lasted for the first body shops crappy work. What I painted with rattle cans is still holding up. You just have to find a good shop, which is not an easy task in my area.
