I wrote mine on the women in the Klan and their uprising, true reason for being a Klanswomen, etc... There are deep pieces of the Klan. It's crazy what little detail you can talk about for a while. I wrote about women in the Klan joining for civil rights for THEMSELVES and gender equality through their male Klan counterpart. Next thing you know, I've got 4 books on women Klan members and way more information than I'm allowed to use.
That's just me though. Personally, the Klan fascinates me.

I would have suggested how the "Church" of Scientology slowly took over Clearwater, FL but that began in the 70's and is still in progress. How about the process of taking a science fiction novel ("Dianetics") and making a "religion" out of it? The book came out in the 50's... Yes, I have issues with Scientology.

If i had to do a history paper in that time range (and I'm assuming with a time crunch) my thesis would probably be something like: "Out of all the monumental literary pieces in history, the most catalytic work responsible for shaping the free world as we know it today would be Thomas Paine's Common Sense."

Napoleon vs the Duke of Wellington
The rise of the British Empire
Colonial influence around the world (and its effects)
The slave trade
The economic pressures of monarchy
The Capetian Dynasty and it's effects on France
The realities of the French Revolution
The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and it's influence on the new world
The Protestant Reformation
Henry VIII and his effects on religion and England
The scientific revolution
The Spanish inquisition
Issac Newton and how he changed the world
Plague - each outbreak and there were at least 6 large ones
The Seven Years War - think last of the Mohican's
Effects of the Revolutionary war in America
The war of 1812
The industrial revolution
James Watt and the steam engine
Creation of the US Constitution
The Rosetta stone and its effects on history
World War I and II
Vietnam
The rise of Islam
I wrote a 20 pager on why General Longstreet was not responsible for the battle of Gettysburg but ultimately General Lee was.
Out of all these topics you should be able to come up with something that interests you, and then read about one of them. Once you have done that, take a stance on a specific issue, since you only have 10 pages to work with, and make an argument and try to prove it.
I wish I would have had that range of topics when I was writing papers. There is so much awesomeness in that amount of history.
Say I chose World War II, I would take a stance on the nuclear issue. I would prove that "although the nuclear bombs killed thousands of people it was indeed necessary" or go with something like "how could Germany succeeded in its goals" or "why the USMC is so awesome" etc. ...
Or Napoleon: He was over-confident in his abilities when he attacked Russia and when he ultimately confronted the Duke of Wellington at waterloo.
Islam: The effects of the spread of islam and its correlation on the world today
Chris I like that topic! Damn Canadians and your pesky overlords.
