bolt size for exhaust shield?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

bolt size for exhaust shield?

Post by Pablodragon » Wed May 19, 2010 4:19 pm

getting a rattle/vibration right around 2k rpms...
pretty sure I narrowed it down to this, the exhaust shield
Looks like the former owner rigged it with some wire after the lower mounting hole rusted, and now I see the upper mount has no bolt.
Anyone know this bolt size so's I can re-align this shield and stop the vibration?

By the way, that's looking down, behind and over the back of the valve cover

Odds are the bolt is still in the header or broke off I'd check that first but its a very small 8mm head on the bolt

ok, will check... was too hot to look when I took the pic....

it just looks like there is a circle around the hole where a washer goes, and thought that the whole bolt and washer are gone

I've seen two different bolts used in second gens at the junkyard. I've also had nothing but problems with the heat shield bolts there even on southern cars (from when I went scrounging around for an exhaust manifold)

It does look like the head snapped off of the bolt in that spot. It might be far easier to rig it better than trying to replace it.

Otherwise it looks like you have to remove the heat shields to get the bolt out and that is a huge pain. The bolts on the bottom might not be any better, or even there if the previous owner messed with them.
