3rd gear FAIL

Post by DOSneons » Wed May 19, 2010 9:03 pm

Ok so ever since i got my car the tranny acted funny, shifting hard and what not. so i changed the bushings and it shifted a lil smoother, but yesterday i was getting on the highway and went for 3rd and all i got was a ridiculously loud grind. now it will still go into 3rd but its a bitch to get in there and is very loud...

im guessing synchronizer but I DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT TRANNYS.

so id like some of your opinions on what u think.

also i have a whole other tranny out of a 00 es, is it the same as the R\T???

00 e/s tranny will be 3.55 with a cable clutch bellhousing. You have a 3.94 with a hydraulic bellhousing.
You can swap the bellhousings, but you will notice a decent performance decrease/mpg increase with the 3.55 though.

If it will go in when driving like a granny (Low rpm's, slow shift) but not go in when racing (higher rpms, fast shift) then it's a synchro.

as a last ditch effort i'd drain the crappy atf fluid out and put something better in there and see if it helps. If not do like everyone else said and swap the trans.

Try adjusting the pedal height. This alone helped a lot of my hard shifting.

It is simple, and free. If it doesn't help the first time, move it the other way. It doesn't take much.

All you will be out is some of your time, if it doesn't have any positive results.

try double clutching and see if it goes into third, for the mean time. Like an old army deuce and a half!! but it may sync it enough to shift with out grinding until you get it fixed.

Or just shift without the clutch. But then 3rd is the one that won't do that in mine. Clutch definitely needed, unless all the planets align, and there are no solar flares. :P
