AFX/R pcm Question

Post by Eric Goodwin » Sat May 22, 2010 1:52 am

So I am thinking of getting an afx pcm for my 2000 mtx and I just want some input from people that have them. I don't want to go into MS or anything like that and I've read that for a NA setup afxr is about as good as your going to get unless you have a crane 14 or something. I've also heard of lots of problems with them and with Howell but most of those are from 4 years ago so I just want some input on it to see if its worth the cash.

Thanks

I believe the only problem with the '02 - older units was the delivery time. It is the NGC units that didn't work as advertised, or the programming would get wiped by the dealer when flashing the VIN.

If you are getting a used one that is known to be in working condition, then yes it is prolly worth getting. There are just some issues with the IAC control between '00 and '01/'02 units. (Like any non modified PCM)

I have a sentry key system so do I need a special sentry key pcm or can I get any pcm and have it programed at the dealer?

should be able to have it simply flashed with your VIN at any dealership.

If the AF/X has sentry, you will need to get it flashed to your VIN, and SKIM. If it doesn't, and you don't want to pay to get it flashed, or don't care if sentry doesn't work, just unplug the SKIM module in the steering column, so the PCM doesn't see it.

It would then be plug and play. No need to have the VIN flashed. As long as it doesn't see a SKIM signal, it will work fine. Once it sees SKIM, it will permanently become a SKIM PCM.

I've had numerous AFX's and loved each one...
I only had 1 unit that was sold to me with a known issue and I tried to figure out the cause of the problem and ended up blowing the pcm. If your car is equipped with a sentry system you can activate any non-sentry pcm to work with your car by transferring info with the DRB3 which any dealer with common sense can do for you.
