215/45/17 opinions please

Post by ilpadrino » Wed Nov 16, 2005 8:10 pm

Anyone have this set up for their wheels? I'm most likely buying new wheels this coming spring and since I despise the 205/40/17's that i'm running, I'm looking for a different size tire.

Would 215/45 have any issues? It should fit, right? I am lowered with dropzone springs and tokico struts.

Pics, opinions, and experiences are welcome! Even if you don't have 215/45, if you have something close, i'd like to hear about it.

Thanks.

I have 215/40/17 and like them... fit good. The 45s will make your speedo show 2.3mph slower than you are. The 40s will only be off by .3 mph

I say go with some 215/40/17 so you're speedo won't be off as much.

My biggest concern is comfort. Needless to say, 205/40/17 is like riding on glorified rubber bands.

Isn't the 40/45 number what'll determine the comfort level? 205/215 is just the entire size, correct? I always used to confuse the numbers lol.

Like I said, the reason I dislike 205/40/17 is because of the bare chrome that it seems like I'm riding on.

The 215 is the width of the tire and the 40 is the height of the sidewall in relation to the weidth.

So on your 205/40 the sidewall is about 82MM tall, on 215/40 the sidewall is 86MM tall.

Ride comfort also depends on what tire you pick, if you pick a tire that has stiff sidewalls you're gonna have a harsher ride.

im running 215-40-17 and they are much smoother then 205s. right now they rub a lil on the inner fender when i turn the wheel beyond it abilities. but for the most part its not something to be concerned about. so i doubt 215-45-17s will fit without rubbing.

Remember... radar isn't 100% accurate, thats why going 5 over is allowed for a margin of error of the gun. If you contest a ticket for going 2 over you can easily get it dismissed blaming it on the gun. It'd almost be better to test using a GPS. Though the speedo on the car isn't totally accurate either since I've tested a couple cars with stock wheels and tires and the correct tire pressure and the speedo is usually off by a couple, not enough to notice.

I had problems running 215/45-17's when I turned hard corners or hit bumps the rear rubbed on the inside of the fenders, It was probably because I didn't have a sway bar and I had a large sub box and amps in the trunk.
