Interesting problem in the 1GN

Post by glasswars » Thu Jun 10, 2010 5:20 pm

So here in NJ we are not allowed to pump our own gas. So everytime I've filled the first gen up, the same problem has happened.

The gas attendant will come up and ask what do you want etc. I always fill it up. This is where they proceed to put the pump in the car and lock it in place. However the 1GN for some reason keeps unlocking the pump like the tank is full; but it's not. It happens probably every 15 seconds or so, this is when the gas attendant proceeds sticking the pump in the tank a million different ways and nothing changes, then they proceed to get mad.

I offer to help and just let myself do it but it's illegal in NJ to pump your own gas and they get really mad then.

So what do you think it is that's causing the gas pumps to unlock themselves like the tank is full, when it's not?

WTF!? So every gas station requires some random to pump your gas? Fu%% that!

Does it happen at every gas station?

As for your issue there could be a kink in your filler tube which causes the fluid to come up and shut it off. There was another thread about it somewhere.. Ahh here it is:

I've never had this problem with my 1GN car, maybe you should move to a state that has self-service stations

Lots of 1gn's do this.

Mine does it. It takes me like 10 minutes to fill my car up because I have to hold it to where it just barely pumps. I think on the 1gn it's something to do with a breather?

Both of my first gens never did this, but I vote on a possible kink.

Also, if I ever go to NJ, I'm not getting gas.

Yeah it sucks. I always have to watch and make sure they put premium in the red car.

Most local and self-owned stations don't really mind, but since I only use Shell and Sunoco, they feel their liability is at stake.. don't know what the problem is.

Thanks for the help and input though gents.

lmao, think about how pissed you would be if you worked at a gas station and kept hearing it click off every 15 seconds.. all the while you have 3 other cars to fill loll.

My car does it some times, takes a few tries to get it right.

I had a picture of my buddy pumping his own gas in NJ, with the sign behind him stating it was illegal, he didnt see the sign.

There is a small tube that runs from your fuel tank to the top of the fill nozzle tube. It's purpose is to fill up when the tank is nearly full, pushing the vapors to the top of the tube in a concentrated amount. When the vapor is close enough to the pump nozzle, the pump senses them and shuts off. Sounds like your tube is filling up too fast (possible bent) and causing the pump to read vapor prematurely.

Pumping gas is only one of Jersey's many problems.

I'd never live there, that's for sure.

Haha, agreed. I drove through NJ when I came back from Boston in my 4runner. I pulled into a station, popped the fuel door, got out and went for the pump.....and about had a panic attack when a dude started yelling at me and telling me I couldn't do that. Mentally, I was so confused for like three seconds, I felt like I was 2 years old.

Give what OB said a shot. I'm willing to bet it's somewhere in the evap system.
