need assistance, broken shifter cable end (2001 neon)
need assistance, broken shifter cable end (2001 neon)
okay i have an issue, the main cable that connects to the bottom of the manual shifter on my wifes neon ... has busted ... the plastic housing on the end of the cable that would support the bushing is in about 15 peices ...
i am close to 800 miles away right now on job training ... so i can not look at it directly ...
is this still a job that requires the entire shifter cables to be replaced? ....
or are there repair kits that replace that part now? ...
need help with part numbers or links to what i am looking for so i can get it ordered and repair it when i get back next week.

Definitely not repairable, you'll need a new cable. I'm 99.9% sure they don't sell the linkages separately too, which means you're buying both. Dealer only item IIRC. I'll wait for others to chime in about the part number. Did you check the PN section?

looking through that right now to see if i can find it ...
i am getting her to send me some pics now on my cell phone so i can make for sure it is the cable end and not the bushing ... but it sounds like the bushing from what she said ...
whatever it ends up being i need to get it ordered so the part will be there by the time i get home so i can get the car up and running again so she doesn't loose her job.

Those bushings blow out all the time, it's super common. Hopefully that's what it is, in which case you should order up some Boogers. They won't wear out, and they make the shifter feel much more solid, without any change in effort or anything.

Eh, then I'm gonna bet on it being the plastic housing for sure then, boogers don't break.

You broke Boogers? Breaking them when removing them doesn't count

no not from removing them ... just from the heat and such breaking em down after a while in the engine compartment ... would be the first ones to go out on the shifter ... having to wait till morning time so she can send me a better photo... but i am thinking that may be what it is ... at least i hope it is....
Wow man I don't think I've ever heard of someone going through more than one set of Boogers. Let's hope for the unlikely chance that it happened again!

They don't melt that easily. Other parts under the hood will melt first. Nothing else you'll find under the hood will attack them. Polyurethane is resistant to most chemicals.
I got your email. Priority Mail sent out on Monday is about the best I can do.

If I need to do something I'll need to know before 6AM Monday before I go to work.
If there's a molding problem with one I'll replace it, no issues with that.

You can repair the ends, however it takes some tools to do.
I don't know if there is much info here, but over the on the org you can look up Kyles cable ends.

i lucked out ... it is just the bushing ... fixing to send you an email Jeff...
and i just wanted to add this in case anyone else finds this thread while searching...
it looks like it may have worked loose some (or may not have been pressed in place fully when i put in the shifter a few years ago) and finally just got destroyed from her driving it around and not telling me that the shifter felt sloppy ....
i am in no way trying to state that your bushings failed .... because i still beleive that the last one i had to replace was because my battery was overcharging and the fluid inside it leaked out onto the bushing and eroded it ... and i am willing to say that it may be i rushed installing it ....
