I'm sorry I wasn't on here earlier, I could have cleared up all your confusion for you. I work for AT&T, and watched a live blog of the Apple Conference...
The iPhone 4 is the 4th iPhone that Apple has released. It is NOT 4G and it will not support 4G. But don't be discouraged, AT&T won't release 4G to the majority of American cities till 2012, so it won't be outdated next year by a faster network. Speaking of network, the iPhone 4 (as well as the 3GS) accesses a network which the 3G iPhone can not, HSDPA. HSDPA is much faster than existing 3G data. Generally, standard 3G will get you 850 Kbps-1.5Mbps (depending on the city, time of day, coverage, etc), whereas HSDPA can get you 3.6Mbps - 7.2 Mbps (ideally).
Now, back to the iPhone 4. It's amazing. The screen has 4 times better resolution, so videos, pictures, games; basically everything looks better (It's like going from VHS to blueray). It's thinner. The camera is 5 MP and also takes HD videos at 30fps. It has a front facing camera, which I'm sure Skype will soon take advantage of. The device has a 1 Ghz processor and 512 MB of RAM, so it's a workhorse. Also, the antenna is on the outside of the device (the metal band) and is supposed to be stronger (though it may take a couple firmware updates...). The battery has 40% longer life.
In the mean time, if you have a 3GS, I wouldn't complain. With the new update (ios4) through iTunes you get multitasking (pandora and texting!), folders, wallpaper, a universal inbox for emails, and tethering (internet on your pc or mac through your iPhone)!!! The tethering works amazing btw.
So yeah. The iPhone 4 is not the iPhone 4G...
