new strut question

Post by silentneon01 » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:24 pm

Been calling around to see about getting my front struts replaced and final got a price I liked. But they suggested replaceing the strut mounts. I've got KYBs for the front. I called modern and asked about the mounting plates and was told that I don't really need them most just use the stock and they weren't sure why I was told they should be replaced.

Mind you car has 205K on the clock.

any info would be great. Thanks!
Big John

I would agree with replacing those mounts, they have bearings in them that can wear over time causing clunking over bumps and while turning. My SXT has 68k on it and they need to be replaced already :\. Previous owner failure.

I would also have to agree, the bearings in the tophats have been known to fail as early as 60K miles on STOCK struts. They're a weak point in the front suspension. Preventive maintenance FTW.

Possibly they meant to just use oem bearing plates. They might have though you meant camber plates.

With 205,000 miles, I would also think about replacing the springs.

Just from personal experience, I have had struts fail in 20,000 miles with high mileage springs.

Indeed, replacing the beaten springs is a very good idea, both for safety reasons as well as ride quality.

Yup my SXT had 60k with stock struts and they were blown then. We thought the swaybar endlinks, LCAs and Swaybar bushings were the problem (they too, were all worn) but the issue was actually the mounts, which I just got in from the dealer the other day.

I beg to differ. Coil springs do wear out. If not, then why do valve springs get weak? Same thing, just smaller.

I don't really agree that worn springs are a problem, but free plug. If you do want some low mileage springs PM me. I took mine off my car at 40K and they're just sitting around. If ya want them just throw me a few bucks and money for shipping and they're yours.

WTF are you smoking, we're talking about strut mounts, not "worn out" coil springs. Do you even read before you post? You're the same guy who posted a bunch of crap on OHV configurations when the guy wanted to know the difference between a long block and a short block.

The last thing talked about was worn springs, so you should have specified what you were referring to.

And as to the other post, I was only adding to what Racer posted, so I suppose him referring to OHV engines also makes him a crack head...

Take a chill pill already. Sorry I stepped on your ballsack.
