Holy freakin hell...

Post by 2005.Neon.SXT » Fri Jun 25, 2010 7:05 pm

Alright, so I got the tires put on today. I love them, they look great and since it was the first time I've gotten brand new tires, I could feel the car grip the road better (or maybe I just happened to be driving better for some reason lol).

So... two things. First, they break one of the freakin studs on the front passenger side. When they used the air gun tool thing, apparently it was cross threaded and it snapped the stud. So I had to sit around and wait for them to bring one from the warehouse. At first they told me I could come back later if I wanted to, but for some reason I didn't believe them when they said "you still have 4 studs, so it'll be safe to drive on". Ok... whatever, I waited. Then they forgot to do my re-alignment on the car. Then they came back and said that I need Camber bolts. $100 for these 4 bolts that go into the strut to help camber the wheels...?? Any of you guys familiar with this? I mean, yes I understand that I lowered the car and the wheels are naturally kanked, but I've never had this brought to my attention by any of the shops from the numerous times that I've taken the car to a shop. Just wondering what your thoughts are about this.

Anyway... the tires are done. Just gotta wait for the mirrors to be painted (which should be done by Tuesday) and the headlights :)

Then it's el finito for this guy, as far as car modding goes :(

Mushroom factor?
"The term 'mushroom' factor refers to a phenomenon associated with older (and some not-so-old) houses in which repair projects 'mushroom' into far bigger and more expensive projects." I copied this from a blog about home improvement. The phrase works just as well with car repairs.

You don't have to censor acronyms tramps :-)

I've only heard of ppl needing the rear camper bolts not both sets though. You could always slot the strut holes.

new bolts needed after a tire change?

Image

Same here with a group repair shops (ATU - they have many repair shops): Everytime you bring your car to them even for just an oil change they tell you what all must be fixed in the car. New struts, new brake pads, new discs, new control arms, windshield wipers, trans fluid, problems with the steering and many many more. Every wear part you can imagine.
Like they would tell you that you need to refill the turn signal fluid...

Btw: Be carefull the first miles. New tires are very slippery!!!

Those were for the alignment. $100 is way overpriced for camber bolts.

But tire places will make $ anyway they can. I would have made them throw them in for free, to offset your inconvenience.

I assume that you lowered it, then took it for tires/alignment. Stock height should not need camber bolts.

Also if you dropped it, that would also explain the better handling. If it was already dropped, and previously aligned, I would question one or the other shop's work quality.

If it actually needed the bolts, and the tires last longer, then getting boned on the bolts will even out.

It still won't make you feel any better tho.

First off, thanks for staying on topic (lol @ the other guys). Those are the products that they dude showed me, and yea I guess each side needs two of those (that's what the guy said), so a total of 4 bolts for both front tires, and all that for $100. That didn't even include the labor. I would've had them place them for free, but I was already sick of being there, it was almost 5pm, and I had been there since 1pm. The whole situation was just pissing me the fuck off, I just wanted to say "stfu, give me my keys, and I'm out" lol.

In your opinion, do you think I REALLY need those bolts? I mean, the car's been lowered for 2 years. If you think I should need them, I may get them off Modern Performance and have them done at another shop or if it's something I can do myself....

Actually... they should only need one per side. And no, you don't need them unless your old tires were bald on the inside or the car handled horrible. I don't have them and never will. I'd slot the struts first.

Interesting. Ya, the shop told me two per side. And the car didn't handle horribly. I mean, it's not perfect, but it wasn't horrible either. And I'm not gonna lie... what does "slot the struts" mean? lol...

Well most people put one undersized bolt (camber bolt) in one of the two holes in the strut so it can pivot to get the correct camber. Why two would be needed is beyond me...

Instead of using camber bolts you can literally slot, or elongate, the holes in the strut side to side so the bolt can move freely where it needs to and then tightened. Same idea, different method.

Hmm.. trying to picture this in my head, but it's turning into an epic fail. Have had a long day.... I guess pictures would help, but ya. Don't worry about it man lol. I'll look into it one day. It's just funny that, with how long I've had the car lowered, no other shop has said anything. Oh well.

Thanks for all the input.
