Don't know where noise is coming from...
Last week I had my rear brake rotors and pads replaced, as well as my front right drive axle. Well, replacing the axle fixed the "clunking" problem, as well as having my ABS light being on all the time. But now, my car just randomly squeaks( loudly). It seems to do it more on right turns than left. It also seems to squeak more at slow speeds than fast, but I just might not be hearing it at fast speeds. The squeak seems to be on a rotation, as if it's not constant, but at a specific point on the rotation of a tire.
Also, my brake pedal no longer "pulses" when I apply it (which I think was due to the broken front right drive axle throwing off the ABS sensor), but now my brakes squeak when applied. It was just the rear brakes and rotors that I had them replace, as the front ones are good (replaced by me and a friend last fall).
The shop that did the axle took their work apart this morning, put it back together, and put some acoustic sensors on either side of the car to find out what side of the car the noise was coming from, and they couldn't decide.
What on earth is going on with my car?!?! Any ideas would be great. Thanks.

Do you have rotors or drums on the back? When I had my rear drums cut and new shoes put in a couple of weeks ago, one of the springs kinda stretched and was rubbing the hub causing a squeaking noise.

Probably shouldn't listen to anything your penis says, that guy's a dick.
Too much time spent here is a sign of a bad case of Ownaneonvirus.Patience, of course, is a very powerful weapon, but sometimes I start to regret that it is not a firearm.

Were the brake broken in properly?
Also, I made a mistake one time of forgetting to tighten the ball joint and ended up having a screeching sound when i turned and gouged the brake rotor... yeah, that sucked.

I just wanted to make sure. Sometimes people call them rotors and pads, but mean drums and shoes.heydockyle wrote:Chris04sxt wrote:Do you have rotors or drums on the back?2001 ACR wrote:Last week I had my rear brake rotors and pads replaced,
Not saying he doesn't know what he's talking about, but some people don't know the difference.

If he has a "2001 ACR" I'm guessing he meant what he said...
That being said, my car started doing this in the fall! I have disks in the back now and it will squeak when I make right turns.. WTF. So I was using old rusty 1gn rotors that I got with the swap and ceramic pads. Ok, so I just upgraded to TriNET drilled/slotted rotors and the noise was gone, cool! Well now it's back. Not as bad as before but they still squeak... Idk wtf it is. In addition to that I get to hear the noise from the drilled/slotted rotors now and the banging of the struts due to worn out top mount plates... I guess. Oh, the joys!

Yes, I most definitely have rotors on the rear brakes and not drums...
Honestly, I have no clue if they put anti-squeak stuff on the pads. My rotors were rather oily though.
Hansken, what do you mean by "were the brakes broken in properly?" I didn't realize that brakes needed a brake in period. The first 250 miles I was very gentle, and even down-shifted before almost every single stop. So, I don't know if that was supposed to help or not.
sidepipe87, you aren't encouraging me. Ugh, why was my car silent (save for my loud engine) from 100k to 150k miles and now suddenly it decides to start making all sorts of racket? It's sad, I'm enjoying my 05 Focus ST (2.3L) much more than my 01 Neon ACR now

^Well they're gonna say you didn't "bed them in properly". This is actually a much debated topic, and no one really knows what's correct... Some people seem to say you need to be very hard on them at first. Go fast slam on the brakes until you almost stop, and repeat until the brakes start to fade from glazing over. They say this will somehow make them conform to the rotor better or some bs and they'll be quiet. Idk... like I said, mine are still squealing.

I have never heard keep slamming the brakes until they begin to fade...
The procedure that I have seen, and performed several times, is from Hawk:

Just in case anyone who reads this doesn't know, you don't want to engage the parking brake because your chance of getting a warped rotor increases significantly when pads sit on the rotor surface while it is cooling down (that single spot cools at a different rate because of the pads, causing it to warp), simply put. After installing new pads make 6 to 10 stops from approximately 35 mph with moderate pressure. Make an additional two to three hard stops from approximately 40 to 45 mph. Do not allow the vehicle to come to a complete stop. When completed with this process, park the vehicle and allow the brakes to cool completely before driving on them again. Do not engage the parking brake until after this cooling process is compete.
I never heard of that. Hmmm, I always, 100% of the time use my e-brake.darthroush wrote:I have never heard keep slamming the brakes until they begin to fade...
