F**K speed bumps... at night

Post by wheels04sxt » Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:13 pm

FYI: coilover n00b. probably shouldnt even admit this happened, but it did and now im laughin about it so

i just installed my coilovers last weekend and then decided i wanted to go lower last night. made my adjustments and felt pretty happy with the stance and set up over all so i figured why not see how she handles now.

well after about 20 min of spirited driving i decided to head home and make a few more adjustmnets. then came the speed bump that ruined my life... i mean night...

Image

Image

it was about 10 pm and i couldnt see for shit as i have yet to aim my headlights... oil filter was almost completely seperated from the sandwich plate which is now beeing removed and ill be using the stock oil pressure sending location to run my oil pressure gauge.

oh and front lip and grill inserts are still MIA... any one have any f/s please let me know

Image

so to all the lowered 2gn peeps... speed bumps are very unfrogiving, avoid them at all costs lol
or just pay attention and try not to show off for the girl in the car next to you. remeber, you drive a neon she most likely wants nothing to do with you hahaha j/k but really... pay attention!

thanks

You really should be more careful, especially since you went from low, to lowwww. Gotta keep an extra eye on the road in front of you now. :)

So wait... your front lip AND grille inserts fell off when you hit the bump?.... how the heck did the grille inserts fall off??

You should really aim those headlights.

Probably should have aimed the headlights BEFORE doing anything else. Bet that's first on the list now, isn't it?

I don't understand why you guys all want to drive around so damn low. I'm only on 1gn springs and daily driving is a little bit of a chore. I can't imagine how much shit you guys have to deal with while even lower...

to all: yes i will definitely be keepin my eyes peeled and pay better attention after this lol

random1: headlights are now aimed. i like bein low esecially as low as the car sits now. its my car and set up the way i like it. it may not suit the taste of everyone or fit thier needs/wants but it does mine. thats what modding a car is all about, makin it your own right?

2005: yeah idk how the grille pieces fell out. i didnt even notice till i got the car home. the front lip was already busted and barely attatched. that was next on the to-do list untill now lol

on a good note i threw on a new oil filter and oil, old oil only had about 1000 miles on it :banghead: and everything else under the car looks fine. head lights are aimed and im definitely more catious now lol

now to find a new lip and grille pieces...

yea man I said this in another thread....that sandwich adapter is an easy install but sux for us lowered guys....I got scared when I saw the filter hanging below the oil pan so I took it off and I tapped the pressure gauge into the idiot light on the back of the block... Hope the cars ok...

yeah the cars fine now. if i cant find a new lip in a few days ill just get a new kit from the stealership and have an extra rear lip f/s. it was a bitch to get the remainder of the filter off lol and i too took out the sandwhich plate and used the asme location to run my gauge after this

live and learn i guess... just thought id share my "learning" expierience with you guys

Yep, this is why I'm going for the 4X4 stance... fits with my being such a geek. :D

To the OP- props for sharing your story :salute: and glad that the damage wasn't any worse.

Wasn't being a dick or anything man, it just makes no good sense at all to DD a car that low so that a normal rock (or speedbump) can potentially blow your motor up. I understand some people think it looks good ( I obviously disagree) but to look good and be so potentially unsafe? There is a line, and IMHO, that's way across it. Very similar to the assclowns running stretched tires or so much camber their tires are on a 45 degree angle with the road...

i know i never implied you were being a dick. i was just simply stating that while it may not suit everyones taste, it does mine.
i agree with you on the ridiculous negative camber and stretched tires though, shit looks retarded. but i enjoy driving my DD car low it may be at the ride height it sits. not to mention the unbelieveablle improvement in handling/cornering.
i learned my lesson and made the proper changes to ensure it wont happen again.

Need to be much much more careful next time and glad everything went OK.

By the way how low is your car sitting? I drive on some serious speed bumper too and the metal on the side of the body will hit the bumper first before oil filter do. That's when I heard the sound "zzzzzzzzzzzzzzn".

Sucks that it happened but at least it wasn't as catastrophic as it could have been. Lesson learned as you said. Did you try going back to the speed bump area to find the grilles?

not sure exactly how low lol i didnt measure the fender apex to the ground yet. but i have about maybe an inch between my cv and the strut body lol
but it was one of thosse very short but extremely tall bumps, i didnt see it comin and was doin about 45-50 i was: :owned:

so ill be spendin the rest of my afternoon and most of tomorrow trying to find grille pieces and will most likely be pickin up a new lip kit today. anyone need a rear lip? lol

wow, i'm assuming the actual bumper hit the speed bump and hence how the grill pieces and lip were popped out. glad to hear there was no serious damage though

If the bumper hit, did you double check for lower rad support damage?

He hit hard enough to make the fucking grills fly out, yet the bumper is still fine... So these lip kits can actually be advertised as bumper protectors, then?
