Crash data suggest driver error in Toyota accidents

Post by Mr Josh Zombie » Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:33 pm

Hm. Imagine that.

Link Here
The U.S. Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of data recorders from Toyota Motor Corp. vehicles involved in accidents blamed on sudden acceleration and found that the throttles were wide open and the brakes weren't engaged at the time of the crash, people familiar with the findings said.

There was some speculation of the computer crashing and not recognizing that the brakes were being pushed.

I don't actually believe there are that many drivers fault operation. The black box cannot explain everything. Even Toyota states that the data recorders only record if the system is working properly or not. If it fails, then wrong data will be recorded.

Perhaps the throttle was wide open, because the PCM put it there? It's not like the driver can directly connect to it. If the pedal was stuck, then yes the throttle would be where the PCM sent it to, based on the load/pedal input. It doesn't know why the pedal is where it is.

Yeah, I have a feeling that the ECU can't tell us everything that happened. Just because it's telling us people weren't slamming on the brakes, doesn't mean they really weren't.

Plus some people could have just panicked and didn't think to hit the brakes.. there are a lot of morons on the road..
