CAM PS & oil light

Post by iskyfly » Thu Jul 15, 2010 9:57 am

Several weeks ago I replaced the cam position sensor. Yesterday while going around a roundabout my oil light came on briefly. Got home and noticed that there was some sort of liquid pooled on some sort of structure under the battery (anybody know what that is?) I took a shop rag and dipped it in there to collect it up and noticed that it was a golden in color and viscous ie- motor oil. Suggestions on what to check? I'm certain the cps bolts were tight.

Did you swap the cps seal to the new sensor when you installed it? It looks like a thin ring.

The new sensor came with a seal / gasket / o-ring that I placed into the new CPS before installing. I didn't notice one when I removed the old cps. There seemed to be remnents of the old seal located on the cps mount (engine side) back when I replaced the CPS.

If the old seal is still on the mounting place then you should take the CPS off and remove the old seal.

Well, upon further inspection guess what I found in the engine bay? The seal from the new CPS.

Holy oil leak Batman!

P.S. :
Those will leak even when new, so don't hold your breath. If it still leaks after you re-install it, pull it out of the groove, clean with degreaser, fill groove with silicone, and reinstall seal. then attach assy to head. Let cure for 15 to 20 minutes. That's what it took to 98% stop the oil leak, at that sensor on mine.
That "milk jug ring" has to seal whatever psi is at the cam journal. I think a square or standard round ring would have worked better.
