New guy, New to neons, not to modding cars though

Post by Mr. Pink » Sun Jul 18, 2010 4:34 pm

Well i am getting into my first foray with Neon's and Dodge's in general. I have been modding cars for years now(Honda's,Nissan's,Ford's) but i have always had a soft spot for Neons 1st gen's specifically but i couldn't pass up the deal on the 2000 Neon that i am getting tonight, its cosmetically rough, needs lifters(1 or more collapsed) and was "riced" out by the owner before last.(dash mat, underglow, stick on scoop(now MIA and hood is damaged from flying up)). I am sure there is more but for now here is my quick mod list for the future.

Bodywork(dents,dings,paint)
Plymouth/Chrysler Neon front bumper- http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee20 ... rs/3-7.jpg (have no clue where to get one though)
SRT-4 gauge cluster
Full coilovers(not sure what brand)
Custom made Harness Bar
ST sway bars(front and rear)
Fixed back Driver seat(unsure of brand)
Reclineable Passenger seat(brand matched to fixed back)
PT cruiser GT motor swap w/atx trans(health problems so no 5 speed for me :( )
SRT-4 OEM exhaust
SRT-4 OEM dual exhaust rear bumper

I am sure i will come up with more to add to the list.

here are some shitty pics for now( i pick up the car tonignt at 8pm)

Yes Dan this is the same Mr. Pink from xceed, i see a few names on here that are familiar to me.

The swap is hypothetical but i do want to do it, that is if i keep the Neon.

Thanks guys, i am looking forward to learning about the Neon more than i know now.

Welcome. The SOHC does not have lifters, just rocker arms on a rocker shaft. You are likely hearing piston slap, especially if the sound goes away when warmed up. No big deal. I thought for sure our 95 beater had rod knock but 7000 miles later it's still running.

I know what rod knock sounds like, I've blown up more than my fair share of engines.

Excessive clearance between the piston skirts and cylinder walls, which is taken up when the pistons warm up and expand slightly. It's rather normal for neons, our 2004 SOHC does it too. I think people found ways to quiet it down but I wouldn't worry about it. I've noticed SOHCs do it more than DOHCs for some reason, but it varys engine to engine.

Or could be loud rockers, or rod knock. Was just suggesting other things it could be. I'd have to hear it in person to figure out what it is.

i am betting its Rockers, because the Previous owner drove it 10k as it sits, and more than likely beat the piss out of it. and its not rod knock because i have had plenty of vehicles that developed rod knock and this doesnt sound like anything i have heard before(rod knock wise)
