Throttle body question.

Post by TheFrette87 » Sat Jul 24, 2010 11:25 pm

So I keep reading suggestions from members to swap an ATX throttle body onto MTX neons. What's the difference between the two? And what would swapping the MTX throttle body onto ATX do?

There is no difference, other than the cable pulley. Both are the same diameter on 2gn neons. (52mm) Not sure where you are reading all this at.

The ATX TB I recently took apart even has the same throttle plate as my MTX one, so that isn't even a factor. There is no benefit to swapping them.

1gn TBs were different sizes (49, and 52mm), but those will not direct fit to a 2gn, and 2000 is the only year they would work properly, if you were that bored to make one fit.

Yeah my '05 ATX SXT and my '04 MTX R/T have the exact same plate and housing, the only thing that appears different to my eye (I'm by no means a certified mechanic) is the bracket where the cruise and throttle cables clip into on the R/T was metal instead of plastic....perhaps this was a change for style or years (I seriously need to sit for about three days and read up on the history of our neons.....

The R/T never had an ATX (At least factory equipped).

This is the one I got from you:

I'm assuming the lower cable pully is for the '00/'01 kickdown cable. 2002-2005 wouldn't need that extra pulley.

And this is mine (2001 MTX):

The part numbers are different between MTX and ATX IIRC. Only difference is the ramp angle which the cable connects to. Other than that there are no differences, and no difference in diameter. Also 00 and 01+ have different IAC motors.

The throttle cables are also different between them. I'm assuming to account for the longer distance between the cable holder and cable pulley on the ATX.

4669790AD Throttle cable, neon, auto trans 2000 - 2002 $52.95

4891251AD Throttle cable, neon, manual trans 2000 - 2002 $36.45

Edit: Throttle bodies

4669894AB MTX 2000 only
4891096AB ATX 2000 only

4891 278AC ECB Automatic DGL (4 speed ATX)
4891 374AC ECB Automatic DGC (3 speed ATX) 2001 only
4891 375AC 1 ECB/ECH DD5 Manual Trans

So there are at least 5 styles.

Wow, I never realized the throttle cables were different, between ATX and MTX !!

Thanks for the interesting bit of info, Bill.

Well what got me wondering is the top pic (atx), the throttle cable hooks to the far left hole.
The bottom pic it hooks to the hole facing you. There is about 1" difference in length.

I modified a Mustang TB for a member on here, so I was concerned about it being correct. He said he has an ATX TB with a 5 speed swap, so he should be good, as far as the cable goes, since everything was ATX to begin with. 2003-up seem to be the same cable PN# tho. Go figure.
