Pirellis or Yokohamas?

Post by Pablodragon » Sat Jul 31, 2010 3:43 pm

Finally got some money set aside for tire... right now I'm running Kumho ASX's, 205-50-16's (don't like them, bad in winter and wore out quickly)

Discount tire has 2 they are offering me... Perelli P6 4 season plus and the Yokohama YK250... both in the 205-50-16 size

The Pirellis have a 45,000 mile rating while the Yokohamas a 65,000... he said he'll give me the Yokohamas for the same price as the Pirellis

(you can see both of these tires on the discounttire.com site , just search for that size tire... never know if I should put alot of weight on the reviews there...they seem to go from 1 extreme to the other)

Any comments or advice on these?.. wanna stick around $100 or less per tire

Even though I bought a different-sized tire, I'll share my story with you. I replaced the OEM BF Goodrich SRT-4 tires with Yokohamas (YK520 205/50R-17) in June of 2006 at 1,322 miles on the odometer. They had to be replaced at 30,465 miles (November of 2008), even though Discount Tire warranted them for 60K. I'm normally a very conservative driver (ask anyone  ), had rotation/balancing every 6K and an alignment twice during that period and the tires still had enough tread wear to warrant replacement. Needless to say, I don't recommend Yokohoma tires. The Michelin Pilot Exaltos that Discount Tire swapped under the warranty are a completely different story (and American-made to boot!).

Count your blessings..... I once wore out a set of Falken Zieks 512's in about 10,000 miles, (despite being rated at 40,000) !! :x

Thank you for the tip about the Michelin Pilot Exaltos, David.... appreciate it.

Falkens in 10k. Ha.

Around the time I just got my license and my orange car on the road I put them on the front of the car. I think they lasted like 3k..

Needless to say I've grown up since then, and my tires last longer.

Personally, I would be looking at Yokohamas. Check out the AVID series, they are pretty good. I had about 50,000 miles on a set of TRZs before I replaced them due to sidewall cracking. The cracking was covered by Yokos prorated warranty because the tires were less than 4 years old and I got a brand new set for $250. Based on the treadlife I was trending to get at least 80,000 miles out of them.

I liked them so much I put a set of TRZs on my work car, when I could have put any tire I wanted on it.

I will be getting a set of TRZs for our Caliber soon. I would look at other tire options but the options are very slim in the 18" size that the Caliber has and I'd prefer to stick with the stock size.

I bought 4 sets of tires from March 2008 to June 2009 and 3 sets in from July 2009 to July 2010, I'm probably not the person to talk to when it comes to which tires will last the longest.

I will say that each tire under a certain brand will have different characteristics and different longevity results. Just because <insert random model from Brand X here> was a garbage tire doesn't mean <insert different model from Brand X Here> will also be garbage. To say that all tires from a specific brand are garbage because you had a bad experience from 1 model of that brand is incredibly naive and closed minded.

I've said it a bunch of times, like with most things in life, someone's opinion on tires is complete relative to what they've driven on previously and what they are looking for out of a tire, and most of the time that person's opinion is completely crap.

Remember that every Toyota vehicle is complete crap because I used to own a 1984 Toyota Supra and it fell apart, I'm never buying another Toyota again.

hey... bumpin this thread back... just had a question...

I went with the Yokohamas... so far they are great... I'm always amazed at how much nicer it is... sound, handling etc... when you put on a new set of tires...

my question is, due to some haggling and pricing... was able to get the tires "siped" for free...

keep in mind, I had outer tie rod ends replaced and an alignment done before I got my new tires... but it seems like when I find myself on one of those hiways where they groove the pavement for traction/winter driving... the car seems to move around a bit, like wiggle a little on these surfaces. I have driven the same sections with my old tires and didn't notice it doin this.

Is this indicating maybe a bad alignment or could it be that I just have more sticky tires, now that they are siped and a nicer brand name, with the tires realy trying to grip those grooves in the pavement?

I think your just feeling the affects of a tighter/newer suspension parts. adversly you wouldnt have felt that.

I dont know if im right, just a thought.

I don't think 'siping' would have anything to do with the car following the grooves.
Some tires will aggravate that condition, depending on design.

Alignment may play a factor, too. If you have done any suspension work, like removing struts or springs, you'll need to re-align the car, anyways.
