Help/Advice Needed: R/T MTV Actuator Motor Disassembly?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Help/Advice Needed: R/T MTV Actuator Motor Disassembly?

Post by rmc03 » Fri Aug 06, 2010 3:24 am

Hey guys I'm in need of some advice, I purchased an R/T intake mani from a friend and was concerned about one of the wires being loose from the actuator, I tested it and it functioned properly so I heat-shrunk it to keep it in place and hoped I could get away with it.

As I was installing the manifold this evening the wire broke from the MTV assembly with no chance of soldering a piece to it.

Has anyone pulled this piece apart successfully? I've had the actuator off of the plenum but I have not taken it apart. If I can get it apart it'll be easy to solder up a new set of wires. Any help is very much appreciated, Thank you -Ryan

Here's my progress:

Not too sure if it can be taken apart without destroying it. But at this point, you have nothing to loose.

Yep. Some guy just bought one off ebay and said it wouldn't work so he took it apart and cleaned it. Can't remember who it is though.

But he didn't take the coil part apart. It was/is in the FS section for $35ish, but I can't seem to find it now.

thank you for your input so far guys, I was originally hoping to just pull the piece apart to fix the wire while I had the intake out of the car but it looked too risky.

I noticed there was a C-clip by the shaft itself on the MTV unit, but it looked to me as if there was a pressed piece of metal or something enclosing the coil, I was unable to come up with a plan to disassemble it to fix the wire leads to the coil.

I'm hoping to get some tips if someone else may've pulled it apart down to the coil already, Thanks again guys - Ryan

Meh, $35 shipped is a steal for an operating MTV motor. IDK if it would be worth $35 to struggle with yours to get the IM back into full operation. Working at it at leisure for a potential future spare, maybe.

for future reference for anyone>>>

it's a breeze to pull apart, there's just a plastic cover over everything, the coil pack itself is attatched with the shaft to the mounting plate.

to take the cover off just grind off the small 4 plastic nubs coming through the mounting plate (*** do NOT grind off the 4 inner nubs, they center the actuator when you bolt it non ***)

then pull the plastic cover directly outward from the mounting plate, make sure you don't twist it or rock it because there are metal contacts inside the top of the plastic shell that plug into the coil

thats it!
