Fiat may gain full ownership of Chrysler by end of 2011
Image
Fiat wants a controlling stake of 51 percent in the American automaker before Chrysler goes public again in an IPO
Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has said that it is "possible" that his company will take a controlling stake in Chrysler Group LLC by the end of the year.
Marchionne, who is also CEO of Chrysler, wants to increase Fiat's share of the American automaker to a majority 51 percent. That would ensure Fiat's control of the company before Chrysler once again goes public in an IPO.
"I don't know whether it is likely, but it is possible that we'll go over the 50 percent mark if Chrysler decides to go to the markets in 2011. It will be advantageous if that happens," Marchionne told reporters in Italy on Monday.
But there are obstacles to the deal.
Chrysler will have to first pay back $7.4 billion in government loans from the United States Treasury, the Canadian federal government and the province of Ontario. Either that or the loans will have to be refinanced before Fiat can purchase an increased share in Chrysler. Marchionne hopes to refinance the loans in the first quarter.
Fiat acquired Chrysler at the time of Chrysler's bankruptcy in 2009. It paid no cash for a 20 percent stake in the Detroit automaker in exchange for investments in production. Fiat will be able to raise its stake to 35 percent upon meeting certain conditions, which the automaker is set to do this year. Those conditions include providing Chrysler with a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine and a vehicle that makes 40 mpg (5.9l/100km).
Fiat will then have to buy the final 16 percent of Chrysler with cash to raise its stake above the 50 percent mark.

allpar reports that Chrysler regained the best-selling minivan crown again.

I had fun at the Indianapolis Auto Show on the 26th. VW had a Routan in their display and I shocked the heck out of a potential buyer when I showed her the VIN sticker ("Manufactured by Chrysler Group LLC") and told her that she would save money by buying a Town & Country. She grabbed her husband by the arm and they walked away!

Speaking of the auto show, aside from the Charger and Challenger, Chrysler had the most boring display of all the automakers present. I still haven't figured out the wisdom of having a PT Cruiser, Sebring and 2010 300 (not the 2011's in the brochures they were handing out) there. :tardbang:

When Chrysler goes public again I will own it just like I own Ford, GM, and Tesla.

I considered buying stock in some companies... not sure I'd go with a car company, however. Interesting choice.

Bought Ford at $2 a share, Telsa at $14, and GM at $35..

Currently Ford is worth $17.89
Currently Tesla is worth $26.89
Currently GM is worth $38.07

I sold 75% of my Ford stock when I bought my MINI.. It was $15 a share, which is a $13 a share profit.
I sold half of my Telsa stock when it reached $34 a share.. which was a $20 a share Profit.
I still have all of my GM stock because it has just recently reached a point that it's higher than it's initial IPO mark.

I've made more money with Automotive stocks than I have with any other type of stock.. A close second is with Retail stocks.

I am hoping to purchase Chrysler's stock when the IPO happens, if nothing else, as a symbolic gesture of support. I've never owned stocks before but have always planned to buy some of Harley-Davidson's someday.

Be sure to check out allpar.com's write-up of the new 300. Even though I'm not usually a fan of the big boats, Fiat has certainly fixed what DCX screwed up. Pretty fancy!

That 8-speed auto providing 30 MPG in a land yacht is pretty impressive (even though it will probably be 0-60 in about eight minutes).

While I wouldn't want an ATX, I am really curious as to what Fiat thinks is a Neon replacement, especially considering that Daimler assumed that the Caliber could do it.

Chrysler has had plenty of partnerships over the years, and as odd as it may have seemed in the beginning, the tie-in with Fiat arguably makes more sense than any of those past pairings. Chrysler doesn't have much of a presence overseas, and Fiat doesn't in North America. Putting them together, then, could be the perfect formula for global success. The Fiat 500 is coming to North America, and while we've been hearing about Chrysler vehicles being sent to Europe for quite some time now, this is the first actual proof.

The vehicle you see here will be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show as the Fiat Freemont. Look familiar? That's because it's essentially the Dodge Journey with a different badge on the nose. Otherwise it's essentially the same vehicle, produced alongside the Journey at the same plant in Toluca, Mexico.

The only major difference to speak of is under the hood, where Fiat's own 2.0-liter MultiJet turbo diesel engines (with 140 or 170 horsepower) will be offered with front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox initially. All-wheel drive, an automatic transmission and Chrysler's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will be offered shorly after the initial launch. The full details are available in the press release after the break, and see the Journey-come-Fiat for yourself in the high-res gallery below.

Spy Shots: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 caught sunbathing ahead of NY reveal
We can hardly wait for the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to strut across the stage at the 2011 New York Auto Show. Thankfully, we can get our muscle truck fill courtesy of some spy shots showing our favorite non-trail rated Jeep taking in some desert sun.

This next-generation Grand Cherokee SRT8 is rumored to pack a 6.4-liter Hemi engine under the hood, which should be good for around 470 horsepower. Rather disappointingly, the rumormill has the automatic transmission earmarked as only having five ratios, but it's at least said to be the first SRT-branded product with paddle-shifters. What's more, the brake pedal should handily haul in the twisting speedo needle thanks to a set of 14-inch Brembos.

Aerodynamically, the SRT8 is far more efficient than one would expect, with a cD of 0.29 — almost identical to that of the slippery Plymouth Superbird or Dodge Neon.
We are still remembered

I think that they were referrring to the 1GN but I agree that it is nice to be remembered (certainly better than the recent commercial with a 1GN being crushed by a tank).

I though our cD was the same (if not lower) than the 1st gen

If not, it could be due to our larger front bumper surface, but we do have a more raked windshield IIRC.

:) The 2gn is taller & wider than the 1gn, I have no idea if the more severely raked windshield compensates for the larger frontal area. The 2gn car is more comfortable than the 1gn,
kind of a trade-off versus the extra weight. I still enjoy both.
