Neutral safety switch

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

Neutral safety switch

Post by Haganracing » Sun Sep 12, 2010 5:11 pm

Ok, i got the manual swap done in my car this weekend thanks to Juan, jerry, and fuzzy

Its a 2002 atx wiring harness and i need to know where the neutral safety switch is so I can ground it and get the car started..

There was no wire diagrams that I could find for it either..

Any help would be great

thanks

neutral safety is the same as park/neutral. one option you could do is to take the park/neutral switch off the trans, put it in neutral, plug it in, and zip tie it out of the way. right now i'm trying to understand the wiring diagram

Look at your atx tranny. The switch itsself is right on the front and has 3 little prongs. The wiring is only about a foot long and round. Ill go get you a PC of my spare if you want to see it?

I could have done better but you get the idea. If your standing in front of your car looking at your ecu look at the connector to the far left and its this one I took a picture of and it only has the 2 conneactors on it. The short wire (three wires to it) is the fella you want.
My wiring is a fucking mess or I'd show you my actual car I dont think its decipherable right now

Are you also using the ATX PCM?

You should really wire the clutch interlock to ground the neutral safety, so it doesn't get cranked while in gear. You also don't want to have the PCM think it is in neutral or park while driving, unless you want a built in speed limiter.

Looks like the neutral safety switch is located elsewhere than the transmission?

All I have is the '04 wiring for the 41te, and it shows 8 wires. I doubt the '02 does, as it has the separate TCM. I can look tomorrow at the Sundance connector, but I don't know if it is the same, being a '93

My '01 FSM does not show the 41te.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK the '94 FSM shows the black plug as the Park/Neutral switch.

At the bottom far right of the right side picture of the two transmissions shown above.

Just above the pan rail, there is the solenoid pack, then the white range sensor, and the black P/N switch.

Find the connector that matches that switch.

Hopefully the '02 ATX matches that picture.

He is going to have to wire the range sensor so it thinks it's in gear, and the P/N switch closed, or through the clutch interlock switch.

The range sensor and the P/N switch are two separate items, at least on the '90's 41te. I can't see it being much different, since it is essentially the same set up.

for anyone wondering.. yes my car is now running.. don't ask how to start it because its very interesting LOL... I need to get different trans fluid and bleed it. If I stall this out in traffic people are going to be pissed hahahaha

Jerry told me to just connect the starter relay fuse together and it will force my car to turn over (when the key is turned to ignition). So i have a piece of cardboard in the starter relay so all i have to do is connect it to the fuse box and it turns over.. I can't leave the relay in though.. So i have to connect it for a few seconds just to turn it on and then pull it out once the car is started..

Best part, running an automatic pcm and wire harness thats not connected to anything to the transmission really.. Speedo doesn't work and it doesn't have the rev limit at 4k either.. WIN!!

I have a manual pcm in my room (thank you fuzzy :D ) that i might get flashed for my car saturday.. but after all that, i still need to find myself a 02 wire harness for a manual transmission..

An '01 MTX harness should be the same. No real changes between '01 and '02 as far as MTX neons go. Same for the PCM. You haz two years to pick from. Just the '02 PCM, you will get the misfire CEL with an UDP.

Ok cool

My dad pretty much wired the fuse box up so that I have a switch that will run the starter from inside the car.. So if i stall, i can just turn the key and start it right back up (don't even have to push the clutch in, but i do).

I will get the wire harness soon and everything because I would like to have my speedo back LOL

The neutral safety switch prevents your unit from firing up unless your shift selector is in the neutral or park position right?

Correct.

It is just for ATX's tho. The clutch interlock switch is for MTX's (Just to be sure we're all on the same page.)

Hey Haganracing,

I am looking for another wire harness and also the neutral safety switch problem as well. This kids car I am working with is an 05. I did a complete srt swap in my 02. If you are looking for a key. ignition, pcm, locks, key less entry box and wire harness let me know with a price you are willing to offer. I can send you a picture with the date on it. If you would like to see my credibility I am on the srt 4 fourms as fox02neon and also on ebay. If you would like a secure transaction I could even list it as a buy it know on ebay. Just let me know. I also have a few other parts. No motor or tranny.

Thanks Noah

i had the same problem but all i did was ground out the starter relay and it works fine. i have no speed limiter but i also have no speedometer but i believe i kno why. it doesnt have to do with my set up. if you are looking at the fuse box from the fron of the car the pin you put the ground to is the top left pin and your car wil start right up every time. ive been running this for over a year now with no problems.

Yea, i did this just to make sure everything worked. I am looking to see what three wires i need to hook up, i found a tranny guy that is comming over to take a look at it. See how it goes thanks. for your help.
