WTF is up with this double clutching nonsense?

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

WTF is up with this double clutching nonsense?

Post by racer12306 » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:37 pm

Double clutching is from when transmissions didn't have synchros. There is no point in doing it in a modern trans.

Why do all these ricers think it's a good thing?

because THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS said it was cool.

Double Clutching was created a long time ago before they invented sychros and helical cut gears. it serves no purpose on modern cars as a "performance" technique. Hell even truck drivers, who are required to demostrat double clutching to get a CDL, don't even use it. Heel Toe downshifting is about the only rev matching technique you need in modern world.

To quote the good book of Wikipedia.
Double clutching, although time consuming, eases gear selection when an extended delay or variance exists between engine and transmission speeds. The purpose of the double-clutch technique is to aid in matching the rotational speed of the input shaft being driven by the engine to the rotational speed of the gear you wish to select
Thou shall be considered an idiot if thou learns about cars from a movie based purely in fiction.

I'm surprised we don't hear about more people wanting to put a Gallo 24 engine in their Honda/Neon/Nissan/Chevy/Ford/etc.

QFT. Off-topic but double-clutching was a bear when I went to vocational college for my CDL training. The instructors told us that we would probably never double clutch in the real world but they were required to teach it to us anyway so that we could pass the state exam.

And I have learned from this thread to not damage my floorpans with NOS usage.

I never double clutched driving semi's at work, just rev matched to down shift and simply timed upshifts and they just slid right in. Love those HD synchros.

just a bit of info. even in the movie, when they show the shifting parts, they are not even double clutching at all.

professional race car drivers never double clutch.

heel toe down shifts is the way to go. i try to heel toe down shift but its hard to do with out a tach to see the rpm, or as some of my friends do...

if you cant find it.. grind it!

we know we all have done that a few times.
and if you say no or never your lieing.

It's more fun if you no clutch it. Nothing says awesome like a broken clutch cable in stop and go traffic.

As you may or may not already know, I was done with facebook < 2 weeks into it. Finally it was deleted totally instead of sitting unused.

Even then, I had 10 friends and please believe Manny wasn't going to be one.
